Got fibre installed on a 40mbps service, and am getting about 31mbps. While testing it the Openreach engineer said that if I had gone for the service capped at 80mpbs instead of the one capped at 40mbps I would be getting twice the 31pbps speed I am getting now.
This doesnt sound right to me. As I understand it the service I am on is capped at 40, but if I can ony get 31 then a service capped at 80 wouldn't run any faster, I would just be paying for a service with a higher cap that I can't acheive. I would happily pay extra for an 80 service if it really meant I would be getting double the current speed.
So was he talking **** or is he right? Any answers gratefully received....
Thanks!

What are your estimates here http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/ ?
Even if you are connected at 40Mbps, you would not get the full 40Mbps and normally something around 35-8 Mbps range.

Hi mfreshmfresh.
Hope you don't mind me giving away your speeds, which I've attached to my post.
Not sure where he's getting that from. I promise you that we're not paying him commission.

No problem publishing my figures!
So do I take it that Mr BT man is wrong, and that the max I am likely to get in any circumstances is 35.1. Regardless of which service I took?

Quote Is the BT fibre installer talking ***?
Fluently, I'd say.
The cap is exactly that (a cap), what he's saying is like claiming that an electric milk float could go twice as fast on a motorway than in town ('double' the speed limit but vehicle not able to reach the lower limit).

Thanks y'all for the swift replies.
Looks like I am stuck on 31, which is more than double what I had before, all for about 50p more per month. So can't complain!
Cheers!
