Intermittent ping spikes causing lag in online games

Dear Plusnet Support,

I have been experiencing some latency issues, as of about 3-4 days ago, in the form of movement lag in online games (eg COD warzone). I will be moving in a direction then suddenly get flung forwards and backwards, (what I believe to be rubberbanding), thus making games unplayable. I have tried to diagnose the issue myself and have not achieved much, I set up a ping plotter and I will try to attach the results.

I called customer support who instructed me to plug my router into the test port, which boosted my connection speed by about 10 MBs but did not help with the ping problem.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much,

Kind regards,

The Cruise House

Re: Intermittent ping spikes causing lag in online games

Are you testing on a wireless or wired connection?

Also are you actually on ADSL or do you have fibre?

Re: Intermittent ping spikes causing lag in online games

Ah yes, sorry I forgot to specify, I am testing on my desktop PC over a wired ethernet connection. And I have ADSL Broadband.

Thank you very much,

Ah OK. Can you post up a copy of your router stats?

Re: Intermittent ping spikes causing lag in online games

You’re on fibre btw not ADSL. I’ve asked the mods to move your topic to the fibre board.

What do your speeds look like? Try running a test at thinkbroadband.com/speedtest

Re: Intermittent ping spikes causing lag in online games

Thank you for your reply,

Although we have fibre, the fibre does not extend all the way to our house (to my knowledge) and just to a local point.

I don't know if that makes any difference though.

I did the speed test, as can be seen below.

Re: Intermittent ping spikes causing lag in online games

No problem Smiley

Even though it’s not full fibre (FTTP), what you have is still classed as a fibre product (FTTC). Speeds look spot on.

Do you have other devices you have issues with your connection on or just your PC while playing games? Also are there other games you experience lag with?

Finally just to confirm your desktop PC is plugged directly into the router using an ethernet cable with no switches or powerline adapters in between?

Re: Intermittent ping spikes causing lag in online games

Thank you for explaining, to my knowledge, no other devices have experienced this issue, however, I generally only use the other devices for video streaming which, correct me if I'm wrong, is unaffected by the ping spikes as it can buffer. I tried Overwatch and still experienced some minor movement stutters but none nearly as bad as in warzone. And yes, the router is connected to the master socket which in turn is connected to my PC, all via ethernet. I'm fairly sure this is a network issue and not down to a rendering, or any other processing, as when I play with the ping plotter open on my second monitor the lag matched up with the ping spikes.

Thank you very much. Smiley

Re: Intermittent ping spikes causing lag in online games

Ah OK. Yeah it might be worth raising a fault ticket at faults.plus.net as there might be a problem somewhere. Unless you’ve tried that already?
