Intermittent dial tone and slow fibre broadband.

Our phone line is intermittent. Sometimes we have one other times not for days.
And our 'super fast' fibre is really slow it's rubbish!

Re: Intermittent dial tone and slow fibre broadband.

Welcome to the forum @JCooper

Well given the dial tone vanishes you should place a fault call for that first. Any line fault on the phone will cause issues for broadband so you need to get the phone line fixed first.

Don't mention broadband as it will just confuse issues.

The phone line help is at https://www.plus.net/help/phone/phone-line-troubleshooting/ and includes a link to the phone trouble shooter which should log a fault to Plusnet if it finds one.

Otherwise wait for a staff member to appear at some time.

Re: Intermittent dial tone and slow fibre broadband.

Hi @JCooper, thanks for your post.

On testing your line, I'm picking up what's known as a 'loop condition'. It's sometimes an issue with the network, however, In my experience it's usually a home set up issue.

The first thing would be to rule your internal wiring out by plugging the connection into your test socket whilst the issue is ongoing. The test socket is under the face plate of your master socket and we're going to be using it to see if the phone line issue resolves when plugged in directly.

Utilising the test socket rules out internal wiring, face plates and extension sockets as being the cause. How to locate the test socket and set your connection into it can be found here.

Please note, you won't need to use a micro filter with the test socket.

If the issue still persists we'll then be able to raise it to Openreach for further investigation.

Please let us know how you get on.

Re: Intermittent dial tone and slow fibre broadband.

Hi Oskarpapa,

I believe a microfilter is required to physically connect a modem lead (rj11 male) to the BT test socket which is a BT 431a female.

Richard
