IP change and drop in download speed

My router (BT Business Hub 5) routinely drops the connection every fortnight - known and expected behaviour. However, it did this at 13.11 on 10 October and picked up a new IP address in the range 84.92.97.xxx. Previously IP addresses have been in the range 195.99.92.xxx or 146.198.85.xxx. After this latest drop my download speed has dropped from a steady 35.5 Mb to 32.9 Mb. Nothing else has changed and the drop in the download speed coincides exactly with the change of IP address.

Can anyone throw any light on why a simple change or IP address should result in a nearly 10% drop in download  speed?

I will be re-booting the router later on (and leaving it off for a while!) to try to pick up a new IP address but surely a simple change of IP range shouldn't produce such an effect? BT Speed test results and SamKnows charts are attached for info'.

Re: IP change and drop in download speed

OK, had router off for over an hour - rebooted and I've still got the same IP address!

BT Speed test still showing 32.5 MB, wired test.

Data from the router stats is:

8. Data rate: 9999 / 39950
9. Maximum data rate: 28182 / 91392
10. Noise margin: 22.4 / 20.7
11. Line attenuation: 6.5 / 7.3
12. Signal attenuation: 6.6 / 7.4

As this shows, we are very close to the cab, 100m or so, so why is my download speed so low? It is even confirmed by ThinkBroadband tests, which show the drop in speed with the new IP Address.

I know others have much worse problems and overall the speed is still good but it is annoying when the cab is so close and it was just triggered by the router carrying out a routine function. Any chance of a GEA test to see if this shows anything?

Fix

Hi @Caerefail

I've taken a look at your account and rana  GEA test.

You are syncing at 40Mbps with no errors or faults. I have, however, nudged your profile up on our side as far as it will go.

Please let us know how further wired speed tests go.

Thanks,

MoR

Re: IP change and drop in download speed

Hi @MasterOfReality

Thanks for looking - I'm not surprised that you didn't find any faults etc because from my monitoring the line looks fine as well.

Also thanks for re-setting the profile - we did have some power problems a few weeks ago which resulted in a lot of disconnections in a short time so I wondered if the problem was with the profile.

I'll reboot the router later this morning and see how things go.

Thanks, Caerefail

Re: IP change and drop in download speed

Hi @MasterOfReality and @OskarPapa ,

Router was off for 2.5 hours yesterday while I went shopping, picked up the same IP Address when restarted but speeds now back to normal - 35.5 Mbs download.

Thanks for tweaking the profile - the power problems of a couple of weeks ago must have affected it but the impact didn't kick in until the router did its fortnightly re-sync.

Anyway, all back to normal, thanks very much for your help.
