The fact the hub one router can't do port forwarding annoys me. I want to be able to port forward due to gaming. I have an old BT router and a Zyxel router to hand. How would I go about using one of those instead?

Which do you have now, and which do you wat to use?
You asked the question in Fibre Broadband, are the routers VDSL capable?
