Higher than average ping/latency.

Good evening.

I'v ran into a small problem where my ping doesn't feel optimised as it should be, reason being is that a friend next door gets a lower ping than me, and a few others are reporting lower pings too.

I'm playing League of Legends and I currently sit on 49-50 ping on European West servers, but when I go to North America, my ping jumps upto 170-200, what gives?

When I got this new connection a few months ago (80mbit down and 20mbit up) I was sometimes getting 29-30 ping on EUW and 100-110 on NA.

My speeds have been totally fine, but the latency/ping not so.

The first thing I did was chuck out the Homehub router and install a proper one, but that didn't seem to help, so I reverted back to the default one and have gone straight through ethernet, still not seeing any difference.

Here's a tracert I just did:

Tracing route to 185.40.64.65 over a maximum of 30 hops

Hope, someone can point me in the right direction, thank you.

Re: Higher than average ping/latency.

That is normal routing to the US of A, you will normally see at least a 100ms ping to any east coast US game server. Then add in poor routing on US side and anything further west just gets worse. The US hosted MMO's I play I see 120 too 170ms depending on day of the week/holidays

Re: Higher than average ping/latency.

So what would explain the higher ping on EU West servers? The average people are getting in my area is around 25-30 ping, where I'm getting about 49-50.

Recently G.INP was enabled on my cabinet which reduced my latency my around 8ms, but other than that it's about the same I was getting with Plusnet.

You could try renewing your PPP connection to try and get on a different gateway (second hop in your tracert). A different gateway may or may not give lower latency -- worth a try for nothing.
