High packet loss and other DNS issues

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

Same issue here. Consistent 20-60% packet loss, especially in the evenings. Impossible to stream, VoIP or game. Raised a ticket ( 130801748 ), was over an hour on the phone with support asking me to check various things (cables etc..). This issue is so widespread, how is there any justification for customer support representatives not knowing about this and checking things like faulty cables/routers/etc?

Please give us some feedback...

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

Well I tested before I reset router to get onto the static IP and I got 54% packet loss.

Just reset and am now on a static 81. address and have 0 packet loss. I'll keep checking though as I'm not getting my hopes up too high.

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

Despite the apparent silence, I'm keeping tabs on this thread folks.

One interesting observation is the packet loss that can now be seen on a handful of customers quality monitors here.

Notably @andyeff's, @clearx1's and @Ronski's.

We've some maintenance scheduled for early hours on Thursday that I'm reservedly optimistic about (ref: 139840).

Interested to hear from everybody what if any impact it has...

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

Ah, thanks for the heads-up bob!

Can't say I've noticed myself as general throughput seems to have unaffected. Not sure if you can see any of the older graphs, but here's mine from the 5th when dropped packets looks to have spiked upwards:

edit - actually thinking about it, watching Youtube on the TV downstairs has been a little hit or miss - it was dropping out of high quality into a lower resolution a few times noticeably over the last couple days.

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

My dropped packets started with a resync on the 30 July, they didn't seem to nd causing me any issues so I've not done anything about it. I'm on a fixed ip starting 212. I'm using Googles DNS servers.

On the 5 August it got worse.

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

Thanks Bob, other interesting facts for me:

Morning connection much better than evening

Ive had odd days with good connectivity (but most days are bad with packet loss and stutter or low quality in games and movies)

***A VPN resolves my issues*** (but shouldn't need to use one to avoid packet loss).

Switching off VPN sees stutter and packet loss return instantly

Ping plot consistently showing 141.hiper04.sheff.dial.plus.net.uk dropping packets (sometimes > 90%)

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

@jwledwith I am in the exact same situation, same issue on ping plotter. VPN solves everything but I have to pay money monthly for that.

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

My teenage son is angrily reporting packet loss throughout the day, seriously crimping his online gaming and Teamspeak (thus ruining his summer holiday). I've raised a ticket with support, but glad to hear it's not just me (him) that's suffering.

He seems to think that having an IP starting with 51.6 seems to be the problem, can anyone verify this?

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

@ade_r Yes it's not just yourself there are some major issues. There was a little discussion based on the IP bands and it seems 51 IP bands are affected.

Obviously it's mostly correlation from a very small sample number but almost everyone who has had these issues has had a 51 IP.

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

Thanks Tommygun.
I restarted my hub this morning and was on a 51.9 IP, but by mid afternoon it was apparently back at 51.6.

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

The entire 209 and 51 networks seem to be affected.

Ade, if your son is desperate to get it fixed, it might be worth the extra one off £5 to pick up a static ip, which you can do from member centre > Add-ons.

There's something Plusnet have scheduled for Thursday which may resolve the issue, however.

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

I am not in the 51. IP range, am on a 146.198 IP instead. My packet loss has also magically disappeared now that I am using a VPN.
