That router doesn't always respond to ICMP which makes the above a bit of a moot test TBH.

I've got a ping running to plus.net - have had for a while, only the thing is, now it's almost constantly responding with request timed out and on the odd occasion it doesn't, the response time is over 5000ms...

portal.plus.net also times out

That sounds like you could have been on the receiving end of some intrusion detection, rather than anything that's evident of the packet loss issues. I've certainly struggled to replicate any severe outbound packet loss running MTR traces from my machine, even when my TBB graphing showed ~50% packet loss.

@dnpark38, I'm going to drop you a PM, keep your eyes peeled for it.

@bill888 @Bob1, have you changed IPs? I'm not seeing anything on your TBB monitors. Don't suppose you can set them up again and provide the live links (assuming you've not switched to static, of course).

The state of play is much better than it has been over weeks previous following the changes made on Wednesday. As some of you are still seeing though, we not on the home straight just yet. We have quite a bit of work planned that we think will irradiate the remainder of the abnormal packet loss but we need to be cautious in our approach to avoid widespread disruption should anything unexpected happen. Chances are the work will need staggering over the next fortnight or so.

Apologies to those continuing to experience problems. I know it's frustrating (hell, it's affecting my personal line too!) but we're working hard to resolve.

@bobpullen

Are we able to set up the monitor on a dynamic ip? Inferring from what you said it seems like we can but TBB doesn't seem to want to let me.

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

Yeah, you should be able to as long as your router responds to ICMP/pings. ThinkBroadband displays a warning about dynamic addresses but it should still let you proceed.

@bobpullen

I'm guessing the hub one doesn't respond to ICMP then?

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

No Plusnet supplied routers respond by default.

Some can be made to with varying degrees of difficulty.

The best you can do with the hub one is put a device such as a Pi in the DMZ

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

Any idea how to setup the Rpi to reject everything but ping requests ?

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

Something's gone really odd here, I did have ~60Mb download before the problems but now have 7-8Mb down but 15Mb up - for goodness sake this needs sorting out

I'm no expert but something like this in iptables should do the trick:

-A INPUT -p icmp -m icmp --icmp-type 8 -j ACCEPT
-A OUTPUT -p icmp -m icmp --icmp-type 0 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -i eth0 -j DROP

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

Or

sudo apt-get install ufw

sudo enable ufw

sudo ufw status

That would allow outgoing and block incomming while allowing ICMP I think.

BUT,,,, that would lock you out from a pi if you only had ssh access.

Unless this method was used with screen ?

I'm testing on Mint.

Would your method also lock you out of ssh bob ?

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

Hey guys - anyone else seeing high packet loss in the evenings lately? (I'm in London)

PS. Read back on the thread. Obviously I am not the only one. It's sad the problems and packet loss are not acknowledged. What can we do?

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

I found this thread because I'm in London and have exactly the same problem. It's been getting worse over the last few nights, making playing games online really frustrating. I've raised a fault but they are still yet to get back to me.
