Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

@bobpullen

I've had a wide spread of results depending on the test, time, etc.

My TBB live graph, for reference is here.

151122332151122474

151122427151122552
151122588151122700
and this:

http://www.dslreports.com/pingtest/a9c246b49b42/3391061?r=379 (10% loss)

http://www.dslreports.com/pingtest/4296c5b624b5/3391080?r=884 (5% loss)

The Freeola test, however, is showing 0% consistently

Running Windows ICMP pings to various sites also mostly shows 0%

Interesting things start happening though when I ping with different protocols, such as UDP. Pinging to TBB with UDP results in packet loss consistent with their charts (they claim to use ICMP though) and a whole lot of route-switching (that's outside my comfort zone - could be a non issue).

It's kinda hard to test PL with other protocols though, as most sites don't respond to them. I'm currently getting 0-1% packet loss with vanilla ICMP pings to Twitch, but real world the buffering is terrible (unwatchable), etc.

Animated .gif below showing the UDP switching, incase it's relevent (get similar levels to Twitch, etc).

TBB_UDP_Gif.gif

Could it be the severity varies not only with time of day, but also with regard to packet type, size, etc? and that the base windows ICMP ping is not all that representative?

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

I was on the 209. IP and turned my modem and router off for over an hour to see if I was moved and I got moved onto the 51. IP address.

Packet loss is even worse on this for me, speeds are unaffected but packet loss makes any streaming or online gaming impossible. Teamspeak is showing HUGE packet loss constantly.

Below are a few pictures of this:

I will be phoning plusnet tomorrow because this is unusable atm.

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

Just to demonstrate how things improve off peak, I ran the worst of my earlier pingtests again. Kinda re-affirms what the TBB graphs have been showing all along; congestion of some form during peak hours.

Be nice if it was more like this all the time.

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

Not sure if it's relevant, but when I chatting with my mate on Teamspeak he hears me fine, but when he talks he constantly breaks up. this seems worse from around 8pm. It's almost like the packetloss is happening on the return stretch - could be coincidence, could be a thing - I don't know Smiley

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

Been getting 40 -70% packet loss through 137.hiper04.sheff.dial.plus.net.uk and 141.hiper04.sheff.dial.plus.net.uk, ip is 217 atm.

Pretty demoralizing to see how far back this thread goes and the issues are unresolved still.:S

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

Must admit, mine was pretty ropey between the hours of 8-10pm last night, and that's just what I noticed using a tablet.

Tonight around 7 or 8pm you should try downloading a large file and you should see it happening.

Tried last night using the TBB test files. The result wasn't particularly promising Sad

Have a read of my post here. Packet loss across across these hops is not indicative of a problem.

Edit: forgot to mention, as far as I know the outbound route your traffic can take is variable i.e. sometimes you might find it routing through ir01 and other times ir02. The return traffic though, I understand to always come through a single ir depending on how your IP is advertised. I wonder if it's worth those having difficulties posting a reverse trace from here during a period of time when the issue is most noticeable? We might see some commonalities with the route into the ir's.

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

@bobpullen I typically use 1GB downloads from google which always seemed to run down at 8-9MB/s in firefox (thanks for being a firefox user btw Smiley ) from dl.google.com although tonight it took a while to get going...20 seconds or so but once it started it was 8MB/s...whereas the TBB ones, including the speed test, can get flatlines on it if it wants to run at all...

Only seems to be affecting downstream, upstream never seems to have any issues.

Just ran speedtest at TBB and while the test ran at full speed, the results images were loading very...very...slowly...

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

So this is me this evening:

My Broadband Ping - Plusnet PTA

And Pingtest is looking nasty now too:

However extended outbound ping to the TBB monitor box doesn't show anything untoward:

Ping statistics for 80.249.99.164:
    Packets: Sent = 212, Received = 212, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 13ms, Maximum = 36ms, Average = 14ms

Noticed a few oddities and failed downloads during the little use of my connection I've partaken in this evening.

My reverse route from Giganews looks like this:

Slow browsing, random ping spikes, and packet loss on teamspeak for me.

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

I don't want to jinx it but I have had two days of normal internet now. At the weekend I put in a fault with plusnet and I think on Monday night, they did something because my speed went up, the problem was my speed randomly dropped by half last week. Not sure if it is a coincidence or if whatever they did has shifted me somehow. Will keep an eye on it though.

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

Still waiting on a response from my ticket, I phoned tonight but was told they can't do anything and to wait for the faults team to respond to my ticket after waiting 40minutes on the phone.

I also contacted the twitter page earlier in the day and they changed a few settings and told me to reset my router a few times after each change. My IP now seems static and it will not change no matter how I reset my internet or how long I leave it off for but back to the point. I now cannot download any file without it failing. I can barely complete a speedtest and my packet loss is even worse than previous nights.

This is pretty worrying considering this thread is a month old and they are continuing to move people to the new network that clearly has some serious problems.

One test I managed to complete after waiting for 10minutes

And I attempted to download the thinkbroadband test files:

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

very poor again tonight for me too, started around 7.30 pm still very poor as i write at 9.50pm.

The only thing plusnet seems good at at the moment is sending me my invoice, that i cant rely on, a good reliable internet connection, i cant.

I think it might be time to raise a high lever complaint here, ive had this for 6 weeks or more now, and ive had enough to be honest

Re: High packet loss and other DNS issues

So I see my ip profile has dropped from 23mb down to 20mb over the past week.I am currently achieving a speed test result of 16mb down a decrease of 7mb from the last week, with a ping of 59ms. I have tried gateway hopping, to no benefit. I can't even currently watch videos off Facebook without buffering! I'm pretty certain this correlates with switching to the new network. Can someone please take a look at my connection, it's high time something is done about this, I'm just not prepared to keep paying for a sub par service.

Not sure your problem is related?

We are seeing a peak time degradation of service.
