Gandalf - Help Please - Sudden Speed drop as of 1st Jan 2019

Anoush Hi,

Before I go through the pain of opening a fault ticket, can you or someone at PlusNet please just check my line

After months of intermittent faults last year BT finally found a problem and since 25th July 18 my download speed has been a steady 37.1 Mbps or thereabouts, but yesterday it suddenly dropped to a low of 20.8 Mbps and is currently only 26.9 Mbps

Up until 31st Dec I had...

Attainable speed was 44500 Kbps

Sync Speed and throughput was 40000 kbps

SNR was >11 dB

However, since 1st Jan 2019 it is much much lower, this cannot just be a coincidence, something major has changed either at the exchange or at PlusNet ?

Please see attached Sam Knows graph and router stats below, I will see if I can find my router stats from before it fell off the cliff.

I have tried restarting the router, but after I post this I will turn it off for 15 mins just to see if that does anything

Regards, Dave.

Re: Gandalf - Help Please - Sudden Speed drop as of 1st Jan 2019

Hi Dave, I've just had a look into this and have run diagnostics which don't point towards any obvious issues.

Assuming the slow speeds have been noticed over a wired rather than wireless connection reporting a fault would be the way to go.

Re: Gandalf - Help Please - Sudden Speed drop as of 1st Jan 2019

Adam Hi and thanks for the quick reply.

I have just tried the old turn it of and on again, albeit with a 15min off time and it has come back at normal speed Smiley

I will monitor it for a few days though just to make sure, but that appears to have fixed it... Smiley

Post power down stats below

Regards, Dave.

Hi @daveg6hni, thanks for getting back to us and I'm glad to hear your speeds look to have returned to normal. By all means if you do notice any issues with the connection moving forwards please do let us know and we'll happily to look into this further for you.

Re: Gandalf - Help Please - Sudden Speed drop as of 1st Jan 2019

I may have spoken too soon...My best Sam Knows speed check since the reboot is only 29.5 Mbps and the last one at 3 am was only 26.6 Mbps Sad

The router is still syncing as expected, it is just the download speed that is still low ?

I will try a few manual speed checks when I get home tonight, but the last time I had the same issues it all started at Midnight on 1st April 17 and finished at Midnight on the last day of June 17 and this latest issue has started at Midnight on 1st Jan 19, which is just too much of a coincidence and I suspect outside interference like a physical or system change somewhere Huh

And when I say it finished, I really mean it just became stable again, albeit at the slower 32 Mbps, not the 35 Mbps I was getting before April and it was not until the middle of 2018 that BT finally found a fault and my speed increased to 37 Mbps,.where it has been ever since, or until 1st Jan 19 that is.

Hi @daveg6hni, thanks for your post.

On checking the line components that we're able to check, we aren't detecting any sort of issue with the service and on looking at the table you've provided the throughput does seem to be OK.

There are a few errors exchange side in what you're seeing but on running a GEA test (see below) we're not detecting the same errors (aside from the 1 ingress violation):

GEA Test Detail

We are seeing a bit of interference but we're not able to test your phone line and so would recommend getting your phone provider to run a copper line test, to rule out any problems that end.

Please let us know how you get on.

Re: Gandalf - Help Please - Sudden Speed drop as of 1st Jan 2019

Owen, thanks for that info,

I have just checked my Sam Knows box again and the test it did at 9:00 am was OK, it was back up to 37.1 Mbps, so I'm fearing it might be the dreaded interference issue is back that I had in 2017 which caused my speeds to fluctuate between 8 and 28 Mbps between April and June.

I will continue to monitor and I will keep my fingers crossed that it is not back.

Thanks for the update Dave.

Let us know how your monitoring goes.

From 31st October 2022, I no longer have a regular presence here as I’ve moved on to a new role.

Re: Gandalf - Help Please - Sudden Speed drop as of 1st Jan 2019

Well my router has remained synced at 40000 Kbps but the Sam Knows download tests are still a bit erratic, see graph. It is not as stable as it was before 1st Jan, but I will continue to monitor it as the CRC errors still seem a bit high at 0.19 per min, I think it used to be about 0.01 per min, not sure at what point BT's DLM kicks in ?

Re: Gandalf - Help Please - Sudden Speed drop as of 1st Jan 2019

Hi @daveg6hni

Thanks for the update - everything you've provided from the most recent test looks absolutely fine.

If you could keep an eye on this over the next couple of days and let us know if this is consistent, that would be great.

Best wishes

Dave
