Fibre speeds consistently dropping.

Hi,

ive been a plusnet member for a number of years and always been happy with the service.  However I’ve noticed over the last few months my fibre download speeds are getting slower and slower.  My original speeds were around 17-18Mb/s, which aren’t great but we’re as good as I could get on my line.  Now I’m lucky if I get 11-12Mb/s.  A drop of 5-6Mb/s may not seem a lot to some, but for my case that’s a good 33% drop since I signed up.  I’ve not changed any settings since setup, so why am I getting this drop in speeds?

Ive been reading about members getting capped, but considering the maximum speeds I can get compared to some, this seems ridiculous.

I would be grateful if someone from PN tech team could look at my account and see what is going on.

Thank you.

Hi @Jazbur123

Welcome to the forums.

I've just checked your speeds and can see that your router is syncing at 17.2Mbps.

This is within the estimated speed range our supplier has provided for you line - you can view this yourself here

Are you noticing speed degradation over Wired or Wireless connections, may I ask?

Thanks,

MoR

Re: Fibre speeds consistently dropping.

Thanks for the reply.

I only use a wireless connection, and I’m getting 11Mb/s at the moment.  I used to get 17-18 Mb/s.

Re: Fibre speeds consistently dropping.

Hi @Jazbur123, thanks for getting back to us. I can confirm after testing everything is looking spot on from our side to the router with no signs of errors or issues. given it's solely wireless connection you use this hints that wireless interference is more than likely behind the speed issues you've been seeing as of recent and in which case I'd advise following my steps below on how to optimise the wireless settings to suite the property which should help.

The guide below will show you how to log into the router and change the wireless channel as it's usually another router in the area on the same or similar channel that will be causing issues for both wireless frequencies. Before picking a channel I'd suggest downloading a free app called wifi analyzer which will scan your area for all the routers and show what channels they are on between 1-13. Although the above app isn't essential it helps you pick where your router would be best in terms of channels and saves a lot of time doing it via trial and error.

1) To connect to your Plusnet Hub Zero, you will need to open a browser and go to http://192.168.1.254

If you have any issues doing this via Wireless, we recommend trying to do it via Ethernet cable instead.

2) Once you are connected, you will see the option that says 'Wi-Fi Network' with the name of your network followed by the 'Settings' button.

3) Please select 'Settings' and you will be asked to log in with the 'Router Password'. This password is found on the bottom of the router and is case sensitive. This password can also be found on the plastic card that came with the router.

4) The Channel is the key option that we need to look for, If this is on Auto then we will want to change this to one of the 13 channels listed on the drop down menu. This stage is all down to trial and error to find the best channel for you.

If we are experiencing issues on wireless, then it is recommended to change this to one of the 13 channels listed.

Let us know how it goes.

Re: Fibre speeds consistently dropping.

Thanks for the help.  I’m just waiting for a USB adapter to arrive (laptop hasn't got an Ethernet port Roll_eyes) and I’ll try some things out.  Cheers
