OK so in December we switched to fibre as our village finally got the lines installed due to constant village-wide issues with the standard lines for years. So we upgraded to the first fibre package available, got our new router, fibre speeds showed their first sign of kicking in, and then we went away on holiday for a bit. We've come back and I've been noticing a really annoying issue with the strength of the broadband in our house. All day the speeds will be fine. Sometimes the download will drop to the mid 20Mb/s but usually it's above 30 which is what we what we expected.
However each night so far after a certain hour (not sure which but today it felt like about 9pm when it happened), the download speed will critically drop to about 2MB/s, sometimes even 0.20 I've seen it go. The upload will stay roughly the same, sometimes dropping to about 2-4MB/s but that doesn't seem as bad a drop. And the ping will rise to the hundreds.
Initially it was only the wifi getting these problems. My computer is on a wired connection and it was fine for the first few days but now it affects both the wireless and the wired connections and nothing I try to do seems to help.
I've tried opening the plate on the master socket and plugging the filter into the test socket. No change in results. I've kicked off every device and connected them 1 by 1 to see if they are causing an issue (they aren't to my knowledge). Tried switching between channels 1, 6 and 11 on the wifi settings, neither have shown even the slightest improvement in performance. I've even tried disabling the wireless network entirely and seeing if the wired connection would go back to normal like during the early days, that did show a tiny improvement. speeds went up to about 10MB/s but still high ping).
I can't think for the life of me why this is happening. I can't get through to the actual support because chat support goes off at 10 pm which is around when the problem starts happening. And it's too late to make a phone call in the house so I can't actually show anything is going wrong.
It's really frustrating as we are paying extra on our broadband package for the fibre which was specifically set up in our village this soon because of the amount of constant issues on the old lines. And now that it's set up I'm getting less speed than on the old lines by a long shot.

Thanks for this post, it's been really helpful as I've just been asked by Plusnet to upgrade to fibre broadband and now I've read your post I'm thinking more carefully.
Like you, our village has recently had fibre connected but my nearest OpenReach cabinet is still several hundred yards down the road and I'm lucky to get above 3mps anytime day or night.
One question you could help with if you're willing, do Plusnet connect your house direct to the nearest cabinet with a dedicated fibre optic line or do you just get improved speeds because fibre optic has arrived in the village generally ?
If your answer is as I expect then I would see no improvement in spreeds at all.

@Artryx, can you do me a favour and post the output from an outbound traceroute to pingbox1.thinkbroadband.com?

We should be connected through a direct fibre optic line as upgraded to the fibre broadband package. Hit the expected speeds for fibre in our village (asides from at night when this happens) and had emails saying the engineer should be out by x date and we should be changed over now.

@Artryx, thanks.
The SVLAN your circuit is routed through is congested according to our suppliers. In the latest report I've seen there's a projected resolution date of 12th January. Whilst I can't offer any assurances, can you let me know if things do improve after this date?
Failing that, @Gandalf might be able to lend some assistance in getting you shifted to a less congested path.

@Artryx Let me know if you're still experiencing speed problems over the weekend and I'll look into this further.

If you're upgrading from ADSL to VDSL (FTTC) then there is a strong possibility of a speed increase.
With ADSL it's the distance to your Exchange that matters.
With VDSL it's the distance to your cabinet that matters as it's "paired" with a fibre cabinet that has an internet connection run to it by fibre optic cable.
If you put your phone number in the following it should give an idea of the speed available.

Hi @Gandalf. I definitely still seem to be experiencing this problem after friday. Yesterday the internet was near unusable from around half 8 till midnight. Today as of currently (quarter to 8pm) It looks like it might be a repeat of yesterday with multiple speedtests showing my download trying to hit 20Mb/s but then falling each time.

Hi @horsleygc
One question you could help with if you're willing, do Plusnet connect your house direct to the nearest cabinet with a dedicated fibre optic line or do you just get improved speeds because fibre optic has arrived in the village generally ?
No you will probably not have a dedicated fibre optic line .
in answer to the above if you upgrade from standard broadband known as ADSL to fibre this is NOT a new fibre line into your home. The service you receive is FTCC which means fibre to the cabinet then standard phone line to your premises. This is aslso known as VDSL .
this is the same with all isps' using the BT network. (Sky, Talk Talk, BT EE etc )
In a limited number of places what is known at FTTP or fibre to the premises is Available.
As with standard broadband the speed you get with FTTC depends on the distance from your home to the cabinet rather than the exchange .
As an example I live 4 miles from the exchange and best speed I could expect on a god day was 1.5mbps under ADSL. . WWith fibre VDSL I now max at 12Mbps - and a stable connection.that is far les s prone to problems. In my case this is fabulous improvement.

@Artryx It looks like our faults team picked up the fault report you've raised to us and we've found congestion at the exchange which are our suppliers are aware of. There was a planned fix for the 12th but it looks like it's still ongoing.
I'm just contacting our suppliers now and I'll post back when I know more.
