Fibre MTU on Hub One with PS4

I've just moved house and have taken my Plusnet fibre with me. As part of this I've upgraded from the tg582n router to the Hub One. When testing the network on my PS4 (which is assigned to the DMZ and hardwired) I'm seeing the warning message "The router in use might not support IP packet fragmentation, and some network features of the PS4 might be restricted. For details contact the manufacturer.".

There are one or two threads already discussing this issue but the only real solution seems to be to change the router.

I still have my old router and have tested it as compared to the hub one at the site http://www.letmecheck.it/mtu-test.php. The Hub One mtu is 1488 and the tg582n mtu is 1492. Why the difference and will this be fixed in the Hub One? I'm quite disappointed that an upgrade to a newer better router might cause me problems when playing online.

Here are the full results:

Plusnet Hub One

Sending 32 bytes to 91.125.174.206 <- not fragmented

Sending 750 bytes to 91.125.174.206 <- not fragmented

Sending 1125 bytes to 91.125.174.206 <- not fragmented

Sending 1313 bytes to 91.125.174.206 <- not fragmented

Sending 1407 bytes to 91.125.174.206 <- not fragmented

Sending 1454 bytes to 91.125.174.206 <- not fragmented

Sending 1478 bytes to 91.125.174.206 <- FRAGMENTED!

Sending 1466 bytes to 91.125.174.206 <- FRAGMENTED!

Sending 1460 bytes to 91.125.174.206 <- not fragmented

Sending 1463 bytes to 91.125.174.206 <- FRAGMENTED!

Sending 1461 bytes to 91.125.174.206 <- FRAGMENTED!

Sending 1460 bytes to 91.125.174.206 <- not fragmented

From the tests we did, we can assume that 1460 bytes is the largest unfragmented packet
size. The MTU size would be 1488, made up from 1460 payload and 28 ICMP/IP Headers
and payload information.

The current maximum payload size is not divisible by 8.
The actual size of the payload (data) will be limited to: 1456
The maximum MTU size for 91.125.174.206 is: 1488

Sending 1465 bytes to 80.189.34.94 <- FRAGMENTED!

Sending 1464 bytes to 80.189.34.94 <- not fragmented

From the tests we did, we can assume that 1464 bytes is the largest unfragmented packet
size. The MTU size would be 1492, made up from 1464 payload and 28 ICMP/IP Headers
and payload information.

The maximum MTU size for 80.189.34.94 is: 1492

Thanks.

Re: Fibre MTU on Hub One with PS4

The Hub One is a rebadged BT/Sagemcom Home Hub 5 Type A (HH5A).

As you have pointed out, the current solution seems to be to replace the HH5A with a different router.  BT/Sagem don't seem to be interested in resolving the problem.   The BT/Huawei Home Hub 5 Type B variant does not appear to suffer from this issue.

Re: Fibre MTU on Hub One with PS4

it's odd that I haven't had this issue, it does seem to be very hit and miss as other threads have stated.

Re: Fibre MTU on Hub One with PS4

Thanks for the additional info Bill. It's a shame because the rest of the router seems like a big improvement - wifi speed and signal strength etc.

Plusnet support, I've just signed up for 24 months, what are my options? Do you provide alternative hardware? Is there a firmware update in the pipeline?

Re: Fibre MTU on Hub One with PS4

I've just received a replacement router. It is the same Sagem version of the hub one. The MTU is as before and the Playstation network test gives the same warning. Is it worth buying a BT Home Hub 5?
