Fibre Broadband - speed estimate 40 - 57 mb although line supports up to 65mb?

Hi,

I am thinking of joining Plusnet broadband but I checked what services I can get and according to Plusnet's website, the broadband speed I can get is 40-57 mbps while according to BT and my router, I can get up to 65 mbps.
Can you please explain why there is such a big difference?

Here are the statistics from my router and BT wholesale

Thanks

Re: Fibre Broadband - speed estimate 40 - 57 mb although line supports up to 65mb?

Welcome to the community forums @Oti78

BT may be quoting an average speed for its package but it sounds like Plusnet are providing the actual speed estimates of your line.

Put your details in Here and that’ll tell you what your line’s capable of. The row you’ll need to look at is VDSL (Clean)

[edit]

I need bigger glasses. I see you’ve already done the speed estimate check. Looks like what I’ve said in my first paragraph.

[edit 2]

Note to self, read everything before posting. From the max observed speed, your line seems to be over-performing beyond expectation.

Re: Fibre Broadband - speed estimate 40 - 57 mb although line supports up to 65mb?

Hi @Thrall ,

thanks for your reply but I am a bit confused.

1) "BT may be quoting an average speed for its package but it sounds like Plusnet are providing the actual speed estimates of your line. "    - I thought that Plusnet (like any other ISP that uses the Openreach network) uses the BT wholesale checker to provide estimates, that is why I am not sure why there is such a big difference.

2)"From the max observed speed, your line seems to be over-performing beyond expectation." - Can you please explain why do you think that the line is overperforming beyond expectation?

Thanks

Re: Fibre Broadband - speed estimate 40 - 57 mb although line supports up to 65mb?

Plusnet advertise an average speed of 66mbps on the fibre extra package so to try to explain the discrepancy with the speeds between BT and Plusnet I was wondering if the speed you received from BT was an average speed.

Your maximum observed speed is 64.98mbps which is higher than your line’s estimates of 44mbps to 63.6mbps. Wink

[edit]

Or BT might be going off the maximum observed. Ultimately though both use the same infrastructure as you’ve said so there’s no real difference with the actual broadband provided.

so back to square one I guess as I still do not understand why Plusnet says that the maximum speed I can get is 40-57 mbps while BT/Openreach and also my router say that the attainable speed is 64mbps

Re: Fibre Broadband - speed estimate 40 - 57 mb although line supports up to 65mb?

The BT Wholesale estimates can change periodically depending on the line conditions. Possible that the estimates once were between 40mbps and 57mbps.

Ultimately though what’s important is the current estimates and the minimum guaranteed speed you get and agree.

If Plusnet are saying the estimates are lower than what they actually are, then that means your minimum guaranteed speed will be lower.

As far as I see it’s in your favour.

What are you hoping to achieve?

[edit]

A lower minimum guaranteed speed won’t be in your favour actually. It may not be possible to fully get to the bottom of the discrepancy.

From your attached link, which by the way Kaspersky reports has an embedded malicious link that it blocks.

I note that the observed speed might be 64.96Mbps but the upstream is only 6Mbps so I would assume that this is an unreliable result.

The table at the top of your linked document reports a downstream SNR of 12.9dB and a maximum attainable rate of 65.096Mbps but doesn't actually report your actual synch speed. Again this very high SNR if you are really getting near these maximum speeds and is questionable.

What speed are you actually achieving?

At the end of the day if there are no faults on the line Plusnet will give you the maximum speed that the BT infrastructure is capable of providing up to the contracted maximum.

Re: Fibre Broadband - speed estimate 40 - 57 mb although line supports up to 65mb?

My current speed is 40mbps but this is probably because I am on a (up to) 38mbps tariff with my current provider (it seems that they have applied a profile to limit my speed up to 40mbps but I am not sure)

By the way, distance to cabinet is 0.2 miles according to google maps and the router is connected to the test socket

Re: Fibre Broadband - speed estimate 40 - 57 mb although line supports up to 65mb?

What makes things even more weird, is that the VDSL speed under featured products on the BT wholesale website is not stable.

Last week it was 64 mbps, yesterday it was 47mbps and today it is 80mbps

@Oti78

The fact that you are on the Openreach 40/10 service and your distance from the cabinet explains your current 13dB downsream SNR. However your upload speed looks out of line. Is there any background noise on your phone? Ring 17070 and select oprion 2 to check.

Re: Fibre Broadband - speed estimate 40 - 57 mb although line supports up to 65mb?

@Thrall

There's something very weird going on, either with the BT records, your line or both. The two big issues to my mind are:

1. Why are Plusnet offering you a service with a maximum speed that is less than the BT handback threshold?

2. Why are you allegedly only getting 6Mbps upload on the 40/10 service when the line should be capable of achieving 18/20Mbps?

Of course this is just what the records say, not your actual performance. What speeds do you get with an Ethernet wired connection using the test socket when connected to say the Thinkbroadband speed checker? https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest

Re: Fibre Broadband - speed estimate 40 - 57 mb although line supports up to 65mb?

@Baldrick1
the way I see it is a bit different:

I checked today and Plusnet 's website says that I can get 57-72mbps download and 17-18 upload speeds. I think it is safe to assume that this changed because the results on the BT wholesale checker changed from 64mbps last week to 80 mbps today (it was 47 mbps yesterday ). I think that each ISP uses the BT wholesale checker to check what speeds they can provide. So last week, when the BT checker said that I could get up to 64mbps, Plusnet was saying that I can get up to 57mbps and today that BT checker says that I can get up to 80mbps, Plusnet says that I can get up to 72mbps.

So in my opinion, the real question is why the results from the dsl checker are changing while my line stats are staying the same.

if there was a problem with my line,  I think that the line stats would be all over the place, while they are consistent.

I live in a block of flats and I think that there might be an issue with Openreach's network or the Distribution point, as I can see that there are daily changes on the BT wholesale checker not just for me, but for my neighbors as well.

I have attached the test results using an ethernet connection to the laptop and also using the test socket - results are always good for download: 37mpbs , upload is 5.2
