Fibre 38mb drops to 2mb every evening.

Hi,

My fibre speed is dropping to, on average, 2/3mb every evening. However in the mornings the speed seems consistent at around 36mb. Is there anything you could suggest as to why this is happening?

Thanks

Dave

Re: Fibre 38mb drops to 2mb every evening.

Is this throughput (as measured by a speed-tester website) or line speed (sync speed) as reported by your router?

take the test here Wink http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/      and do the further diagnostic test too Thumbs_Up

That's using Ookla speed test. I just don't understand why it would be that unstable.

Not quite sure why this should help? Just tells me what I already know. Here is the results this morning Screen Shot 2016-10-14 at 09.30.26.png

Re: Fibre 38mb drops to 2mb every evening.

We need to know your sync speed as well as your throughput. They aren't the same thing.

If you are using a Hub One router, log onto it, go to the Troubleshooting / Helpdesk page and you will see a table of data. Copy and paste lines 6 to 10 here. Mine look like this (you will have different numbers)

6. Data rate: 1999 / 39950
7. Maximum data rate: 25930 / 77729
8. Noise margin: 30.4 / 17.0
9. Line attenuation: 16.8 / 15.1
10. Signal attenuation: 16.2 / 15.1

One possibility is that you are getting airborne interference that is impacting the line, either between the router and the telephone socket or between the socket and the green cabinet in the street. This could affect your throughput without necessarily affecting your sync rate. It could come, for instance, from dimmer switches either in your household or in a neighbour's. That would account for it only happening after dark. But this is only a guess. We need more data.

Doing the further diagnostic test , saves them for BT and PN to check Thumbs_Up

if you look at my test you can see Wink

Re: Fibre 38mb drops to 2mb every evening.

Okay. Good. That tells us that there's nothing wrong with the condition of your line - it's better than mine. You are syncing at 40/2, which is as it should be. If PlusNet test it, they will find nothing. The line is not the problem.

This evening, when you detect the drop in throughput, record the same 5 lines of data (it probably won't have changed) then restart your router, give it time to connect and record the data again.

Meanwhile, see if you can do the ookla pingtest (it's the next tab along from speedtest). You may need to give it various permissions to get the packet loss test to work. Here's what I get:

153417744

Do it in the daytime as a baseline, then again in the evening when things are bad.
