Re: FTTC plus homeplugs = 1/2 speed?

I had fibre installed two days ago.
Using    Devolo 200s im getting  25.9 down  9.09 up
Using a temporary 15metre ethernet  cable I get  37.47 down  9.12 up
Has I did not want modem and router where PCs are located I opted not have extension installation.
I will however  install a ethernet cable on a permanent basis, in my case the homeplugs functioned but at 2/3 rds speed down

Re: FTTC plus homeplugs = 1/2 speed?

I have been using a pair of D-Link Powerline AV 200Mbps adapters for somewhat more than a year. I bought them after two Devolo failures in short order. They are on different fused circuits, the test utility reports a link rate of 141 Mbps. I have never experienced any degradation of my 54Mbps FTTC service.

Re: FTTC plus homeplugs = 1/2 speed?

Thats interesting my test utility was never much over 100 Mbps on non fibre ,it is now 0nly 65 Mbps.
With my non fibre connection there was no measurable difference wired and homeplug in speed which was around 3 down and .8 up.

Re: FTTC plus homeplugs = 1/2 speed?

I replaced the solwise 500s with solwise 1200s.  Those give me a advertised rate of around 500mbps, but actual rate of around 200mbps.  Good enough for FTTC.  I moved the router-side plug to the other side of the lounge just in case it was interfering with my vdsl, but judging by the very low error rates shown by my billion 8800nl, it's not having any adverse effect.

Re: FTTC plus homeplugs = 1/2 speed?

My theory is that homeplugs have a sizeable latency.
This is not a problem for file transfer - but the internet is a two-way thing.
So it has to wait, due to homeplug latency.

Pings to hosts the other side of my plugs are around 2-3ms, with spikes of up to about 10ms

Re: FTTC plus homeplugs = 1/2 speed?

@gyre,  is there any chance you could test the speed by plugging the homeplugs into a single double socket (one in each side) and see what kind of speeds you get like that, and then report back?

Are you looking for the speeds as advertised by the bundled app, or actual iperf figures... or both?

Re: FTTC plus homeplugs = 1/2 speed?

I've got a pair of 500Mbps (allegedly) homeplugs.
On a good site (very rare) I can achieve up to 6.5MB/sec - which is maybe 60Mbps and so isn't far of a typical fibre speed of 65Mbps.
This is normally either a speedtest site, a Linux download site or a video download site.
BTW On the same line I've got a pair of 85Mbps homeplugs - these are good enough for iPlayer on the TV.
