FTTC modem stats explination

Hi All,

I have a 80/20 FTTC product and this has been fine for a number of months. Last year, the drop cable from the pole snapped and it was replaced. This appeared to have resulted in a 20 Mbps drop on download speed. My current stats are:

Last initialization procedure status:	0
Max:	Upstream rate = 21836 Kbps, Downstream rate = 59268 Kbps
Bearer:	0, Upstream rate = 19999 Kbps, Downstream rate = 60000 Kbps
Bearer:	1, Upstream rate = 0 Kbps, Downstream rate = 0 Kbps
Link Power State:	L0
Mode: VDSL2 Annex B
VDSL2 Profile: Profile 17a
TPS-TC: PTM Mode(0x0)
Trellis: U:ON /D:ON
Line Status: No Defect
Training Status:	Showtime
		Down Up
SNR (dB): 6.4 6.9
Attn(dB): 17.4 0.0
Pwr(dBm): 13.4 7.4
			VDSL2 framing
			Bearer 0
MSGc: -6 26
B: 178 237
M: 1 1
T: 0 42
R: 10 16
S: 0.0950 0.3781
L: 15922 5374
D: 16 1
I: 189 127
N: 189 254
Q: 16 0
V: 2 0

I see the connection speed as 60/20. Ok. that explains the 20mb loss. However, if I do a speed test using the BT Wholesale speedtest, I can get that my download IP profile is 55Mbps (actual is 46Mbps) and my upload IP Profile is 20 Mbps (actual 12 Mbps)

Is this the current state of play these days on an 80/20 connection?

Cheers

Steve

Re: FTTC modem stats explination

Hi Steve.

Our tests are showing your download line speed banded at 60mbps which would explain the 20mbps drop. I've arranged for your line to be reset to try to improve this which should go through within the next 3 working days.

I can't explain why your upload throughput speeds are lower than where we'd expect, but it may be worth waiting for the line reset to go through as this may fix the issue as well as your downstream speed.

Let us know how it goes.

Re: FTTC modem stats explination

Hi Gandalf, has the line been reset?

Current stats are:

xdslcmd info --stats
xdslcmd: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: Showtime
Retrain Reason:	1
Last initialization procedure status:	0
Max:	Upstream rate = 22462 Kbps, Downstream rate = 62756 Kbps
Bearer:	0, Upstream rate = 19999 Kbps, Downstream rate = 63561 Kbps
Bearer:	1, Upstream rate = 0 Kbps, Downstream rate = 0 Kbps
Link Power State:	L0
Mode: VDSL2 Annex B
VDSL2 Profile: Profile 17a
TPS-TC: PTM Mode(0x0)
Trellis: U:ON /D:ON
Line Status: No Defect
Training Status:	Showtime
		Down Up
SNR (dB): 5.2 7.5
Attn(dB): 17.5 0.0
Pwr(dBm): 13.4 7.6

Current download speed is 47 mbps Down and 12 mbps up. The further diagnostics say that the IP profile is 20 down and 20 up on the btwholesale speed test site. Not sure whether that is accurate since a rerun of the test indicates that TAP3 test has been disabled.

I've also plugged the modem into the test socket to rule out any extension wiring.

Re: FTTC modem stats explination

Hi @CooLix,

Thanks for getting in touch.

I've checked the line and it doesn't appear to have as yet, apologies for the delay. I can see this has been escalated today again, this will take 24-48 hours. The Faults Team are monitoring this and will review it again on the weekend. I have logged this as a complaint for you on your behalf.

Thanks - LF

Re: FTTC modem stats explination

If the line was banded at 60000kbps downstream, and it's now at 63561kbps, it does look like it's no longer banded. I'm not sure what else people were expecting, the max attainable rate in the first set of stats did suggest it wasn't going to leap back up to 80Mb once the banding was removed.

Re: FTTC modem stats explination

The line is in sync at 60Mpbs and the profile it is under shows 60 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload.

The line is definitley banded and we will need to wait to see if our supplier can remove this without  an engineer visit.
