Ever Decreasing FTTC Speeds

When I joined PlusNet  in Jan 2017, I was receiving broadband speeds close to my headline download/upload profile speeds of 70/20.Actual throughput speeds were close to that until circa Jan 2018. However, over the last 2 months  the speeds have fallen from circa. 63/17 to 55/13.

i raised a trouble ticket and I have been advised that the maximum download speed I can now receive on my line is only 55Mbps. Please can someone explain why the downstream and upstream speeds on my broadband line has changed so dramatically from:

_FTTC_SERVICE_0003 (July 2017):

Downstream Speed
70.0 Mbps
Upstream Speed
20.0 Mbps

to:

GTC_FTTC_SERVICE_0000 (Mar 2018):

Downstream Speed
60.6 Mbps
Upstream Speed
17.1 Mbps

The modem is plugged in to the main socket and nothing has physically changed within my home. I am paying for a 78Mbps service and now getting speeds nearer 38Mbps?

Re: Ever Decreasing FTTC Speeds

First of all you are not paying for a '78Mbps service', you are being supplied an up to 78Mbps service. If you put your number in here: https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/ this will tell you whether your speed is within limits.

There are many reasons why it could have slowed, externally it could, for example, be crosstalk due to more subscribers being connected to your local fibre cabinet or electromagnetic interference (EMI) causing your SNR to have been increased to cut down on errors. Internally, again it could be EMI or due to you using a wireless connection for speed testing.

Are you testing with a wired connection to the router, which in turn is connected via a filter to the test socket?

Can you report your router statistics such as SNR and sync rate for us to see?

Re: Ever Decreasing FTTC Speeds

Sorry to hear your speeds have dropped.

I can see you have a fault open and we've asked you for your availability for a engineer visit.

With regards to why speeds can drop over time the information @Baldrick1 has given are the main reasons.

Re: Ever Decreasing FTTC Speeds

I am 500 meters from the cabinet, my modem stats connected to the master socket, via a filter, are:

6. Data rate: 17268 / 61954
7. Maximum data rate: 18163 / 64068
8. Noise margin: 5.8 / 3.5
9. Line attenuation: 21.4 / 16.1
10. Signal attenuation: 21.3 / 16.0

As stated, I seem to be continuously getting the lowest download speed of 55.4 for the last 2 months whereas before I was receiving a constant download speed of 69 Mbps. The upload speed was always a steady 18 Mbps but has dropped 13-14Mbps, which is no where near the low end estimate above.

Re: Ever Decreasing FTTC Speeds

That might have been the case last summer but now plugged into the Master Socket for the  last few weeks.

What a joke .... Download speed this evening 9 Mar 2018 was 1-2 Mb Upload 16Mb for the last few hours with modem plugged in to master socket. I have refrained from rebooting the modem. Time to look for another ISP....speed so slow unable to stream Netflix...

Re: Ever Decreasing FTTC Speeds

Plugging into the "master socket" does not rule out star wiring, or bridge tap issues.

Re: Ever Decreasing FTTC Speeds

It’s even been in the test socket in recent weeks with no improvement in download speed...currently being forced to tether off my 4g phone, download speed is 80mbps

Re: Ever Decreasing FTTC Speeds

Again, in some situations, connecting to the test socket can make no difference.  Star wiring or bridge taps occur before the NTE.

Re: Ever Decreasing FTTC Speeds

Hi there. If you can provide us with your availability for an engineers visit we'll be happy to book the appointment in to further investigate this.

From 31st October 2022, I no longer have a regular presence here as I’ve moved on to a new role.
