ERR_CONNECTION_RESET Error when using Chrome

Hi Everyone,

I am a new user for the Plus Broadband and have been facing this issue on my PC. Whenever I try to access any website, even google.co.uk on my Windows PC, I get the following error: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET.

P.S. It is working absolutely on my mobile.

Re: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET Error when using Chrome

Hi @alexbach

Try This First

If you can use the internet on other devices on the same network, then the cause is on your computer.

Try using another web browser like Mozilla Firefox to browse the same website. If there is no error with the Firefox browser, I would suggest you uninstall and then reinstall your Google Chrome browser on your PC.

Let me know how you get on.

Re: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET Error when using Chrome

Hi @alexbach

Another Thought.

Check Your Proxy Settings

By default, Google Chrome is using the sock/proxy settings of your computer as its own settings. It does not have any built-in sock/proxy settings as in Mozilla Firefox.

If you have used a proxy server with your previous ISP before Joining PlusNet and forgot to turn it off in the LAN configuration of your computer, it may be a cause of this error.

To resolve this issue, go to Control Panel, and click on the Internet Options.

Next, click on the Connections tab and choose the LAN settings option.

Make sure “Automatically Detect Settings,” “Use Automatic Detection Script,” and “Proxy Server” are not checked. Then click on the OK button.

Re: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET Error when using Chrome

Hi,

So sorry to let you know that I've tried to install Mozilla Firefox & Opera on my PC but it keeps showing the same error.

Also, I too think that the problem might be in my system because the WiFi is working great on my smartphone. I am even posting through my phone.

hI @alexbach

Are you able to access any websites using your Chrome browser on your computer?

Re: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET Error when using Chrome

No, it just shows the Google Logo and whenever I type something in the search bar or url bar, it get the error of ERR_CONNECTION_RESET.

Sometimes, it keeps loading and shows "Resolving Host" in both of the browsers.

Re: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET Error when using Chrome

@alexbach

The "Resolving Host" problem is usually a DNS issue.

Try putting this into your address bar 17.178.96.59 (This should take you to Apple's website.)

If this is successful, then there are several things we can try.

Re: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET Error when using Chrome

Hey,

I tried as you said. I put the  17.178.96.59 IP and it redirected the same error that pops up when I enter a website's name : ERR_CONNECTION_RESET.

Cry I am really sick of this. Should I install the Windows again? or maybe try another OS?

Re: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET Error when using Chrome

@alexbach

Which version of Windows are you using on your PC?

If it is Windows 10, did you recently update it to version 1809?

I wouldn't advise re-installing your Operating System at this stage.

Re: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET Error when using Chrome

@alexbach

Next thing to explore:

Check your DNS settings

  1. Click on Start, select Control Panel then double click on Network Connections.
  2. Right-click on the network connection in use (Ethernet) and select Properties.
  3. Double click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
  4. Make sure “Obtain an IP address automatically” is selected.
  5. Make sure "Obtain DNS server address automatically" is selected.

Re: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET Error when using Chrome

Hi @alexbach and (a belated) welcome to our community forums.

I'm sorry that you're having issues loading webpages using your Windows PC.

I'd second Brian's steps immediately before my post. Let us know how this goes.

From 31st October 2022, I no longer have a regular presence here as I’ve moved on to a new role.

Re: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET Error when using Chrome

I have a all-in-one PC and the Ethernet port doesn't work. I also use my WiFi on the PC. That's why I am so stressed out that if I can access the same Internet on my other devices, why NOT ON MY PC?

Re: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET Error when using Chrome

I hesitate to join in; the advice that you have been getting from @ckcomputing is good. Did the suggestions in post 10 not help?

Just to be clear: are you trying to access the internet using the ethernet connection - not wifi - and getting the error message in the title of the thread?

If I understand you correctly, you do have wifi on the PC. Do you get the same error message accessing the internet from the PC using wifi? And the wifi is off when you use the ethernet connection and visa versa?

You mentioned Chrome in the title of the thread, and you don't seem to have been able to use Firefox or Opera. What happens if you use Internet Explorer/Edge?

What virus protection and firewalls do you have (in case they are the problem)? And which version of Windows, please?

Re: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET Error when using Chrome

Fix

@alexbach

Apologies - I assumed you were using the ethernet port on your PC!

Follow the instructions as above, but right-click on wifi instead of the ethernet.

Check your DNS settings

  1. Click on Start, select Control Panel then double click on Network Connections.
  2. Right-click on the network connection in use (Wireless) and select Properties.

Hi Alex,

Initially, I would also recommend going with Brian's suggestion as this would fix it. If not, then maybe you can try this article that I found online.

https://validedge.com/err_connection_reset/

If this is not working, then maybe you should elaborate your problem a little more.
