Re: DNS issue?

You need to say which gateway you are on because Telehouse and PCL both have all four DNS server IPs served by DNS servers in the those buildings.

Re: DNS issue?

I've heard reports that 1and1 (a popular dns / hosting provider) are suffering a DDoS tonight, which will cause some DNS lookups to be failing, and probably causing the PN DNS servers to lag behind whilst they wait for requests for time out before getting to ones it can answer.

Re: DNS issue?

That might explain the random oddness and inaccessible site I'm encountering.

Re: DNS issue?

I lost all DNS at about 00:30 for around five minutes, but my router claimed I was still connected, however ThinkBroadand's BQM appears to differ.

My router's logs (TP-Link TD-W9980) don't show a PPP disconnection, but I don't know if such events are logged, unless my connection has actually been up for 19 day(s) 05:33:52 (the reported router up-time).
(ETA) I've just taken another look at the router logs, and the PPP Session did drop off for about 50 seconds at 00:34, but I'm sure this was after the "not getting any traffic" thing, or possible DNS issue, which occurred a few minutes earlier. A bit too early for PEW, but they (BTW) have been known to announce schedules and then just do their own thing.

Re: DNS issue?

Wasn't using the internet so can't comment on the functionality of it, but my ping graph shows a disconnect at the same time as yours:

I wonder if the PPP session was cut somewhere in the BT route and it took time for the router to time out and log the dropped PPP?

Re: DNS issue?

@'npr' - when you post your tables of DNS test results, after you press the "Insert Quote" button, if you then press the "Teletype" button,  and then paste your text, this will align the text columns properly - making it easier to read.
You can still use the red colour highlight - which doesn't work when using "Insert Code".

So your example from above (with "Teletype") looks like this -
Quote
[tt]  212.159.  6.  9 |  Min  |  Avg  |  Max  |Std.Dev|Reliab%|
 ----------------+-------+-------+-------+-------+-------+
 - Cached Name   | 0.026 | 0.027 | 0.029 | 0.001 | 100.0 |
 - Uncached Name | 0.026 | 0.082 | 0.310 | 0.076 |  96.0 |
 - DotCom Lookup | 0.027 | 0.097 | 0.176 | 0.056 |  91.7 |
 ---<O-OO---->---+-------+-------+-------+-------+-------+
                    cdns01.plus.net
                PLUSNET PlusNet PLC,GB[/tt]

which looks better than -
Quote
  212.159.  6.  9 |  Min  |  Avg  |  Max  |Std.Dev|Reliab%|
  ----------------+-------+-------+-------+-------+-------+
  - Cached Name  | 0.026 | 0.027 | 0.029 | 0.001 | 100.0 |
  - Uncached Name | 0.026 | 0.082 | 0.310 | 0.076 |  96.0 |
  - DotCom Lookup | 0.027 | 0.097 | 0.176 | 0.056 |  91.7 |
  ---<O-OO---->---+-------+-------+-------+-------+-------+
                    cdns01.plus.net
                PLUSNET PlusNet PLC,GB

Re: DNS issue?

Thanks purleigh,
I've modified the original post as per your instructions.
No problem with any of the four PN servers this morning. I'll test again this evening when things get busier.

Re: DNS issue?

This may be related or not but I know Telehouse are having their annual Power Testing conducted this week.  This means that many ISP's may have kit go down unless its on a UPS. You could be seeing GLBP or HSRP failing over???

I've always preferred to use the [pre]...[/pre] (Preformatted Text) tags rather than teletype because of what happens with long lines, teletype wraps the lines, pre doesn't, instead you get a horizontal scroll bar). Pre is the button (to the right of the ).
Try narrowing the bowser window to see the difference with these examples:
