DNS Issues

I am experiencing DNS issues with our fibre broadband which has been getting worse over the last 6 months.

Each day, about 10 times, I cannot connect to any web site or internet service because the DNS is failing.

This has been tested thoroughly and it definitely points to DNS timeouts.

I am using a quality Draytek modem router and have tried reverting back to the Plus Net supplied router but with the same issue.

If I wait about a minute, the DNS resolving comes back as normal.

Then, about an hour or 2 later, it'll go again, for about 2 minutes.

It's frustrating... to say the least.

Any ideas?

Paul

Re: DNS Issues

Hi there,

I'm wondering, do you have your router set to auto-discover DNS or have you tried assigning our DNS addresses manually?

Please try the latter if you haven't, details for that are shown here: https://www.plus.net/help/broadband/about-dns-server-and-website-settings/

Re: DNS Issues

Hi Adam,

Thanks for replying.

My Draytek modem router has 'auto assign' DNS and currently has the following set - 212.159.6.9 , 212.159.6.10

I shall try and change that to 'fixed' DNS with those different servers 212.159.13.49 , 212.159.13.50

Have other people experienced issues like this?

Paul

Re: DNS Issues

Im trying to access british gas home page and TSB home page and both are taking years to load, sometimes it fails with a dns error.

This happens with auto assign and fixed.... work that one out :S

Re: DNS Issues

OK, I can report success.

After various speed tests, I used OpenDNS servers in the DNS Settings on my DrayTek Vigor 2760 modem router.

LAN > General Setup > LAN 1 > Details Page > DHCP Server Configuration > DNS Server IP Addresses

Primary IP Address: 208.67.220.222

Secondary IP Address: 208.67.220.220

Click OK and the Reboot the Modem.

Things are considerably improved by not using the standard Plus Net DNS Servers...

...which does not surprise me.

Thanks. May consider that for my setup, see if my random timeouts disappear.

Has anyone seen my signature, it's gone missing.
