DNS Issues - ongoing

Why are Plusnet users still having issues with resolving DNS names via Plusnet DNS servers?

I have been tracking issues with certain names since 2018 and these issues still exist.  I wont list names as Plusnet simply delete posts that reference sites - I am not talking dodgy sites by the way.

Seems certain Hub One devices may have an inherent fault which Plusnet seem unwilling to address.  Not sure if this is accurate but it might explain why some have issues whilst others do not.

Example

Use Plusnet DNS and it fails ...

>>nslookup renntech,org 212.159.13.49
Server: cdns01.plus.net
Address: 212.159.13.49

*** cdns01.plus.net can't find renntech,org: Server failed

Use a real DNS and it works ...

>>nslookup renntech,org 1.1.1.1
Server: one.one.one.one
Address: 1.1.1.1

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: renntech,org
Address: 204.13.239.17

This particular lookup failure has existed since 2018!

Re: DNS Issues - ongoing

Hi there,

I'm not sure if it was a mistake in what you've tried out or what you've added to this post but I can see that you've used a comma in the URL "renntech, org" I can view https://www.renntech.org/ just fine, it's not returning pings but as the site is visible to us I would assume their web server might not be set to accept ICMP requests as can be the case with many web servers.

I see an obvious problem there - you have a comma, not a full stop, in the address in your lookup - is this possibly the reason?

Edit - @adamwalker  beat me too it whille I was on the phone.

Adam, for info, the site times out for me, too.

Re: DNS Issues - ongoing

Commas are red herring.  I replaced . with comma in post as the forum seems to mark anything referencing a url as SPAM - so after a couple of attempts at doing the post, I replaced . with comma and post worked.

Try a DNS lookup using any Plusnet DNS on that url and it will fail - try it on public dns and it will work.

I can only surmise that Plusnet DNS does not work properly or fails to update.  The issue with this particular url was reported as long ago as 2018.

Re: DNS Issues - ongoing

When you say you can view https://www.renntech.org/ just fine, can I ask a couple of things.

1.  You are using Plusnet - ADSL or Fibre?

2. You are using Plusnet DNS and not public DNS (e.g. 1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8, 9.9.9.9)

3. You are not using a VPN

Thanks

Re: DNS Issues - ongoing

fwiw

Plusnet have automatically allocated my connection with the following DNS settings:

Primary DNS: 213.120.234.42
Secondary DNS: 213.120.234.38

----

Here's the results using yours (but I left mine auto allocated):

>nslookup renntech.org 212.159.13.49
Server: cdns01.plus.net
Address: 212.159.13.49
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Request to cdns01.plus.net timed-out

---

>nslookup renntech.org 1.1.1.1
Server: one.one.one.one
Address: 1.1.1.1
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: renntech.org
Address: 204.13.239.17

And using my current DNS settings:

>nslookup renntech.org 213.120.234.42
Server: indnsc92.ukcore.bt.net
Address: 213.120.234.42
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: renntech.org
Address: 204.13.239.17

---

>nslookup renntech.org 213.120.234.38
Server: indnsc102.bt.net
Address: 213.120.234.38
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: renntech.org
Address: 204.13.239.17

The website (porsche forums) loads fine here

1.  You are using Plusnet - Fibre

2. You are using Plusnet DNS Yes, but as above (mine used to be 212.159.6.9 and 212.159.6.10)

3. You are not using a VPN No, never used one on my Plusnet connection

Re: DNS Issues - ongoing

Looks like you’ve got Safeguard enabled and are therefore allocated to different DNS. I’m going to turn Safeguard on and see if that makes a difference.

Re: DNS Issues - ongoing

Yes it does look like it, but no I don't have SG enabled and never have either requested it or installed it myself.

I've raised this with Plusnet and I was told that if it isn't affecting my connection then I'm best to ignore itHuh. I used to be on those (ending 10 and 9) and for reasons unknown mine were switched to SG's DNS. I did try again to get them removed, but got no where with it.

I am aware of having some issues* with my connection and when moving this laptop to quad 9's DNS (and googles) on this device those issues tend to go away. I've not bothered to raise this again as thus far it's been a waste of my time.

*the main issue appears to be some slowing down of certain websites, but they still do load without timing out - very random so it might not be the DNS (just odd moving off SG DNS often cures it)

As an aside note, good luck with activating SG, this, based on reading the forums, is broken too (for some users).
