Constant Packet Loss On UDP Upload

EDIT: Forgot to mention my line syncs around 40/7 and I have QOS in place capping the connection at 39/6 using OpenWRT to fix buffer bloat. All other devices that connect to the net are switched off so only the PC is connected and as you can see I'm using low bandwidth limits for the tests so the router isn't loaded.

I've been monitoring this for about a year now since I first noticed it. Since about 2015 (was on BT Infinity back then) to present-day online gaming has felt really inconsistent like I'm always at a disadvantage due to some kind of delay/being out of sync with the server. It feels like packet loss but games always report 0% packet loss in their monitoring tools.

About a year ago though I did some UDP tests and found a constant small percentage of packet loss on the UDP upload with spikes up to 12+%. I get small pockets of time where I can run tests for a couple of minutes with 0% loss but other than that it's pretty much constant regardless of the time of day.

Here's an iperf3 showing various amounts of UDP packet loss at different upload speed.

iperf-remote.png

And here's the results of a continuous UDP speed test.

sct.png

Here's a couple of local runs of iperf3 showing it's not local hardware or software problem.

iperf-local.png

I'm currently on the G.Inp trials but that's only been for about 6 months. I noticed this packet loss about a year ago and I'm certain its been there for years before then even when I was with BT Infinity but never noticed it. Any help appreciated.

Cheers!

Re: Constant Packet Loss On UDP Upload

Hello @FrazUK

Together with our network partners at Openreach we will try to provide you with the best speeds possible. If you feel this is not the case, please raise your speed fault online at faults.plus.net

Thanks.

Re: Constant Packet Loss On UDP Upload

I've seen that having a static IP assigned to their connection has helped people with UDP packet loss in the past. Could this be helpful to me? I was just looking on my account page and cant configure a static IP even though I have been able to in the past. I have the message

Re: Constant Packet Loss On UDP Upload

Looks like I now have a static IP, can someone confirm this as I've had no notification of one being applied? my host is now reported as myusername.plus.com and after a couple of router reboots, I've kept the same IP. It hasn't fixed the upload loss though. What should UDP bandwidth be like? Is it lower than your actual connection speed or should it be the same? I can see the higher the UDP bandwidth usage the more sustained packet loss I get. At just 0.5Mbs I'm getting spikes up to almost 10% loss. For example, playing CS:GO network usage for csgo.exe is hitting 0.6Mbs so surely this is causing packet loss too even if the game isn't reporting it (the game reports average over time too, so it might always still show 0%  even though I am getting short spikes of packet loss). I don't want to report a fault just yet, id like some insight on this problem first. Im pasting some iperf3 logs below. Is this expected/normal? Why wouldn't games report packet loss even though I'm obviously getting it on the upload? Could it be routing? I know for a fact a BT engineer will do nothing about this, I've been having problems with gaming for years and had many BT engineers out but it was never fixed.

EDIT: I also have the pro addon so I'm guessing my UDP traffic for gaming should be prioritized.

EDIT 2: I have tested connected to the test socket, 2 modem/router setups, different network drivers and multiple rj11 and ethernet cables.

Re: Constant Packet Loss On UDP Upload

I'm also having the same issue with UDP upload loss

Had 3 engineers out recently, twice for voice fault and one for bridge tap.

Question #206150184 for internal plusnet reference.

My connection is 70Mb/20Mb

Running 10 Streams for 3 second at 1Mb Bandwidth - upto 30% packet loss.

iperf3 -c (my digital ocean server) -p 5004 -t 3 -P 10 -V -b 1M -u

Re: Constant Packet Loss On UDP Upload

@quinnaaa , Could you try the Star Trinity Continuous Speedtest from here? Here is some info about it. It tests UDP traffic.

Re: Constant Packet Loss On UDP Upload

Just had a couple of days where there was little to no packet loss on my upload and gaming has felt great. I was able to do udp tests at 3Mbs up and 3Mbs down at the same time with pretty much 0 loss....some 0.00x% loss from time to time but today the packet loss is back with lower bandwidth and gaming feels like sh*te again.

Re: Constant Packet Loss On UDP Upload

@Mads@quinnaaa  has an iperf server running atm on which I've just tested UDP both upload and download. There are tons of out-of-order packets, packet loss, and a fair amount of jitter. I think this needs to be looked into properly as simply having a BT engineer come out they will just see that the download and upload speeds are fine and say there is no problem. Does a BT engineer even check the quality of UDP throughput? I've had multiple engineers out over the years and this particular problem has never been fixed and has been a constant problem since 2015 bar maybe a week or 2 out of the year where online gaming works as it should. This poor quality UDP performance makes gaming almost impossible, at least in any kind of enjoyable way and gaming is the main reason I and many others have their internet connection in the first place.

@quinnaaa explained his problems with online gaming and from what he has said he has exactly the same problems as me.

@quinnaaa  wrote:

For me when gaming as you say it's the fast moving players, players teleporting when landing shots, hit detection and aim assist non existent, lack of footsteps on enemy players, shot around corners, shot first die first, dying from what seems like a single shot yet kill cam shows multiple hits on me.  The games just plays like you are half a second to a second behind everyone else.  I've experience that in multiple call of duty's and destiny 1&2.

Our problems are so much the same the quote above looks like I wrote it except for aim assist since I play on PC.

Here are some test results

Re: Constant Packet Loss On UDP Upload

I've just had customer service reply to my open ticket with the generic we've testing your line and cannot find a fault.

I've had 3 profile changes in the last 6 weeks, the Open reach engineer requested that interleaving be turned on but that looks to have been reset again and retransmission is high. Also the last engineers visit dropped the connection from 80mbps to 70Mbps download.

0.128M-80M Downstream, Retransmission Low - 0.128M-20M Upstream, Error Protection Off
0.128M-80M Downstream, Interleaving Low - 0.128M-20M Upstream, Interleaving On
0.128M-80M Downstream 5dB, Retransmission High - 0.128M-20M Upstream, Error Protection Off

Can this be escalated any way within Plusnet?  My contract is up for renewal today and right now I'm in two minds.

Surely there are people at Plusnet that can do a deeper dive into the issues we are seeing.
How can customer services state there is nothing wrong when they test as they cannot initiate an upload from my side.
