Connection dropping frequently

I've notice that my line seems to drop several times a week (usually at an inconvenient time - or maybe that's just when I notice it more!!!)

I've just been looking at my router logs, and I'm wondering if my line is also dropping too often:

  • 16:41:28, 17 Sep. (5759488.210000) PTM over DSL is down after 3519 minutes uptime
  • 10:04:18, 21 Sep. (6081251.820000) PTM over DSL is down after 5362 minutes uptime
  • 02:55:00, 23 Sep. (6228290.470000) PTM over DSL is down after 2450 minutes uptime
  • 11:45:01, 25 Sep. (6432889.100000) PTM over DSL is down after 3409 minutes uptime
  • 12:12:53, 25 Sep. (6434561.140000) PTM over DSL is down after 27 minutes uptime
  • 10:00:30, 03 Oct. (7117804.550000) PTM over DSL is down after 11386 minutes uptime
  • 15:42:18, 07 Oct. (7483904.200000) PTM over DSL is down after 6101 minutes uptime

(I chose those lines as they are nice & short!!! more complete logs available if you need them)... so I'm going offline typically every 2 days or so

Also interesting is that over that period the logs have reported a gently increasing line speed

  • 17 Sept: Down Rate=70944Kbps, Up Rate=15273Kbps; SNR Margin Down=3.1dB, Up=6.1dB
  • 7 Oct: Down Rate=71550Kbps, Up Rate=16046Kbps; SNR Margin Down=3.1dB, Up=6.0dB

Can someone at PlusNet please check my stats, see if there's any obvious reason?

Re: Connection dropping frequently

More generally, a question: I appreciate that the line DOES need to occasionally need to re-sync, but (and I'm talking about a line that's been in for several years here) how often should we expect to see the line re-syncing?

@bobpullen - I've seen you doing a bit of digging into peoples line dropping issues: any chance you can comment on mine?

Re: Connection dropping frequently

So, I've been looking at, and copying, my router logs for the last 2 months, and have details of all re-syncs.

This is a summary:

16:41:28, 17 Sep. (5759488.210000) PTM over DSL is down after 3519 minutes uptime
10:04:18, 21 Sep. (6081251.820000) PTM over DSL is down after 5362 minutes uptime
02:55:00, 23 Sep. (6228290.470000) PTM over DSL is down after 2450 minutes uptime
11:45:01, 25 Sep. (6432889.100000) PTM over DSL is down after 3409 minutes uptime
12:12:53, 25 Sep. (6434561.140000) PTM over DSL is down after 27 minutes uptime
10:00:30, 03 Oct. (7117804.550000) PTM over DSL is down after 11386 minutes uptime
15:42:18, 07 Oct. (7483904.200000) PTM over DSL is down after 6101 minutes uptime
10:10:25, 13 Oct. (7982382.830000) PTM over DSL is down after 8307 minutes uptime
07:40:43, 18 Oct. (8405392.150000) PTM over DSL is down after 7049 minutes uptime
07:45:43, 18 Oct. (8405691.690000) PPPoE is down after 3 minutes uptime [Disconnected]
12:02:56, 26 Oct. (9112312.070000) PTM over DSL is down after 11781 minutes uptime
11:08:42, 03 Nov. (9800243.500000) PTM over DSL is down after 6264 minutes uptime
11:06:13, 10 Nov. (10404883.960000) PTM over DSL is down after 10076 minutes uptime
11:24:26, 11 Nov. (10492374.800000) PTM over DSL is down after 1457 minutes uptime
04:35:42, 16 Nov. (10899842.200000) PTM over DSL is down after 944 minutes uptime

So that's 17 resyncs in a 2 month period, so about every 3.5 to 4 days.

And, just in case you're interested, each of the above events looks like this:

Re: Connection dropping frequently

So, back in December, I was asked by Plusnet Support to plug my router into the test socket: that was easy, as there was no extension wiring connected to the faceplate anyway (it was all connected behind the single ADSL filter), and made no real difference.

I kept a log of my router re-syncs (copied from the router logs), and I was re-syncing on average every 2 to 4 days....  so fed that information back to Plusnet Support.

Had a nice phone call from Plusnet Support earlier today: yes, he agreed, my FTTC broadband should not be re-syncing that often. They had tested my line, and that was fine (BT had re-terminated all my joints about 5 to 10 years ago, after major line issues, so that wasn't a big surprise). So, they will send me a new router (mine is now a few years old) to see if that fixes things.
