I just purchased a TP-Link W8960N to see if I can speed things up.
Before I waste too much time I'm hoping for a yes/no answer:
Can a TP-Link W8960N be used as a direct replacement for the unit supplied by Plusnet or do I need some other kit between it and the socket?

No it is not a direct replacement as it only has an ADSL modem built-in , source http://www.tp-link.ae/products/details/cat-15_TD-W8960N.html
So you would be to purchase a VDSL modem if you wish to use the TP_LINK device as a router only.
For a list of suitable devices for FTTC. have a look at http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,14436.0.html
