Buying a new house - Fibre upgrade in area

Hi Guys

Just looking for some tips.  Im currently looking at moving my family into a larger house and although my needs for fast fibre are important, their needs take priority over mine hence why im looking at my options.

Im currently looking at a house where the plusnet speed checker estimates it to be between 35 - 49mb which isnt awful i guess but a bit of a downgrade from the 70-74 im currently getting.

I was wondering if there is anyway to find out if those speeds are going to be upgraded in the near future or whether I will be stuck with them for sometime?

Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

@tokey

The only way currently for speed to improve is to move the house closer to the cabinet it is connected to. Shorter cable, more speed.

In the future, and no one knows when or where, then Openreach may install G.Fast technology which will increase some FTTC line speeds, but again for those close to the cabinet. It may not work for your line even if say if 4 years time, the cabinet is upgraded.

Until G.fast or other technologies become available in your area that's the best you're likely to get

Re: Buying a new house - Fibre upgrade in area

Thanks guys this is more or less what I expected.

40-50mb Im kind of resigned to now but less than that would be seriously unpleasant.

Re: Buying a new house - Fibre upgrade in area

OK next question.  Looking at another house now as we missed out on the previous one.  The new house doesnt have fibre available currently however apparently Open Reach is in 'Field Survey'.  They say this likely means that fibre is roughly 9 months away.

Is this true?  Wouldnt want to buy a house and then be told they are changing their mind about the install.  I dont mind waiting but not forever...

Re: Buying a new house - Fibre upgrade in area

That's a bit of a tough one.

Mine went from build (Which off the top of my head I think says 6 months away) to connect (Which I believe is 4 months) in about 6 months if I remember correctly.

Following this, it was active within around 3 months.

@Chris on the other hand, saw his sit in connect while mine was still in build. His line sat in the connect stage for 4 or 5 months and then it dropped back to build for another 7 or 8 months.

He then noticed last week it had made it back to connect.

Thanks @HarryB

Is there anyway you can get better information from BT?

Unfortunately not Sad

While waiting for mine I kept checking a spreadsheet with the roll-out report on, but it's essentially the same as http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/ maybe just a few days ahead, if that.

Just as a follow up to this, my cabinet has now moved from Connect to Activate within 3 weeks.

Re: Buying a new house - Fibre upgrade in area

I've been seeing reports, over the past few days, of BT now offering to provide free FTTP to developers building estates of 15 or more houses. I'd guess the developers have to provide standard ducting in the new streets and ducting to the premises as part of the deal.

Edit: just checked it is 30 houses.

Now Zen, but a +Net residue.
