Awful peak time speeds

Peak time performance is pretty awful and gets worse throughout the night 😐

Seems to be mainly single threaded performance although multi threaded does suffer slightly too. Every day for at least a week now...sigh 😐

During the daytime or the middle of the night my SFTP transfers rattle along at 9MB/s but peak times it drops to 1-2MB/s.

Anybody else having this?

...I really dislike this new network, on the old network gateway hopping solved problems 😐

Re: Awful peak time speeds

Probably related to this if it's about the Plusnet internal network

https://community.plus.net/t5/Fibre-Broadband/High-packet-loss-and-other-DNS-issues/td-p/1354749

Or congestion/line fault. But the part about it getting worse throughout the night, suggests that it's the packet loss issue that's become apparent throughout these last couple of weeks.

Re: Awful peak time speeds

Can't imagine it'd be a line fault when multi threaded is working fine, it shows the throughput is there

Re: Awful peak time speeds

I believe that the thinkbroadband test is simply unreliable.

No way am I getting these multi-threaded speeds.

Re: Awful peak time speeds

I've noticed browser lag can cause bursts to go high when it catches up with itself...but I tend to negate that happening.

Additionally speedtest.net and beta.speedtest.net which also use multi threaded mostly work...i say mostly because it acts funny at the end of the download test at peak time...like it doesnt want to finish...it's strange. at least on the flash version, the HTML5 beta takes a while to ramp up to max speed which annoys me

That'd be a bit unusual. It's generally regarded as the gold standard. There is an HTML 5 version if your machine has Flash issues.

Ignore the burst speeds. That's usually a sign of browser/client-side issues. What matters are the averages and the shape of the graph.

@nbk: Single threaded being slower than multithreaded usually implies network congestion or throttling. I'm assuming it's local to you as my results seem fine:

The average x6 is slightly lower than single threaded but this is peak time so odd things are to be expected. It probably means nothing (for me).

@Andrue old/new network/which gateway?  http://usertools.plus.net/@gateway/

Differing gateways may have differing results Smiley

pcl-bng01

Lol. Just checked my router:

PPP Connection Time 124d:20h:26m:45s

I wonder if I get a prize when I get to six months?

Re: Awful peak time speeds

yeah @Andrue you're on the old network still, seemingly on a gateway that works for you/is unaffected...lucky sod Sad

Before I got shifted to the new network i bounced around PTW-BNG0* or PTN-BNG0* ...the PCL gateways didn't work for me at all...but I can't do that anymore so permanently stuck with whatever issues my particular gateway is having 😐

Re: Awful peak time speeds

Probably old network, yes, although as I have a static IP address I believe that it's not as easy to tell. Still if I've been connected for four months it seems unlikely I've been moved over yet. Hopefully it stays as it is Cool_smiley

Re: Awful peak time speeds

Looking decent in the morning (although random x1 speed will drop sometimes for no discernable reason as you can see in these tests taken within 3 minutes of each other at 10.52am and 10.55am so yeah I don't know it's very strange

And a 3rd extra weird one for fun

Re: Awful peak time speeds

Another day, another peak time of poor speeds, some web pages (BBC!) struggling to load...

I did an hours work of pinging to the same server that tbb use for the speedtests and out of ~3000 it only lost 2, average 10ms, min 9ms and max 28 (mostly 10ms) so it's odd when speedtests look like this...
