Accurate Broadband Speed Testers

Why do I get different results when testing my broadband speed using different sites? (I don't mean slight differences that could be due to other traffic)

If I use the PN "recommended" tester, "mybroadbandspeed", I get a result of something between 52 and 56 Mbps.

If I use "broadbandspeedchecker" I get results between 58 and 72Mbs.

I'm not particularly interested in the connection speed to some server in, say London, as most of the distance between us is some high speed pipe. I'm more interested in the speed provided over the FTTC system/copper wire from my house to the BT exchange, as I presume that from the exchange to the ISP will be over some high speed pipe.

Is there some way of getting an accurate reading to show if I am receiving (or not) the 60 to 80 Mbps service that I am paying for?

Depends what you have to test with http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/speedtest2.html this one used to be good but isn't at the moment for me. iperf3 gives a good test if you can run a server/client tight to your router or even on the router, Linux would be ideal with a good quality ethernet card and cpu for that. www.dslreports.com html5 speedtester will give you a varied amount of tests including bufferbloat testing. this one http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ should give good results but is giving bad results for some at the moment. In short I see problems with some speedtesters because single thread isn't working properly for me anyway atm. and multi-threaded tests tend to mask the problem. so you might see part of the test slow and the other half fast, then again, other tests will show full speed if that makes sense! ie www.speedtest.net more than likely gives you full speed.

I have tried both suggestions and get not too different results (within minutes of each other):

Thinkbroadband gave 56.40 Mbps for TBBx1 and 55.99 Mbps for HTTPx6

Speedtest.net gave 56.47 Mbps.

Neither of these results are above the 60 Mbps that both PN and BT say should be possible for my line. (I am only about 100 metres from the cabinet)

If PN are monitoring these posts, perhaps they would care to comment?

Or maybe I should raise a ticket?

Why not simply log on to the router and look at your sync and max attainable speeds? That will provide what you say you want.

One would hope a simple synch speed would have been looked at, one would also hope that all tests were beeing done via a cable and not via WiFi as there are to many variables to contend with.

The PC is connected via an Ethernet cable to the router, but I am not sure how to interrogate the router

If you have a Hub One the stats will be in the help desk part of the router labled 6 and 7 http://192.168.1.254
