AOVPN Windows 10 connection issues.

Hi,

I have a work Windows 10 laptop that uses an always on VPN (IKEv2). This has stopped working recently, if I use my mobiles portable hotspot the VPN connects successfully. The error code I get is 809. I use my own Asus AC68U router, my IP is in the 212.159 range.

I have tried:

  • Static IP, apparently I've had this on my account for years.
  • Broadband Firewall in member portal is off
  • Safeguard is off
  • Putting the laptop in the DMZ
  • Another router
  • All suggestions online, however the computer is locked down so no regedit, services.msc etc.

Is there an issue with Plusnet and always on VPNs? Or am I missing something?

Re: AOVPN Windows 10 connection issues.

Have you spoken to your work's IT Dept ? They should be able to see your attempted connection and why it's failing.

Re: AOVPN Windows 10 connection issues.

They advised me to turn off the firewall in the members portal, I told them it was already off. Then they said I would have to get in touch with Plusnet!

Re: AOVPN Windows 10 connection issues.

Have you opened the required ports on the router firewall ?

From what I read AOVPN needs TCP 443, UDP 500 & 4500 ports to be open.

Looking at the router manual there is access to a log file, look for the terms blocked or denied etc.

Someone with Asus experience may be able to advise on best setup or Plusnet Support may know of a solution, you can't be the first with this problem.

Re: AOVPN Windows 10 connection issues.

I have opened the ports but I'm pretty sure they're only needed for the server side of things. I turned on the firewall log and tried to connect, the router doesn't show any dropped connections whilst I'm trying to connect to the VPN.

Re: AOVPN Windows 10 connection issues.

One last thing I can think of. Error code 809 is a generic timeout error, not very helpful but it usually means something isn’t responding or isn’t responding fast enough.  I see AOVPN relies on DNS entries to find the remote server, so is your router configured for the Plusnet DNS servers ?  If so, can you try another server I.E. Opendns or Google.

Re: AOVPN Windows 10 connection issues.

I have tried plusnets DNS servers as well as Googles, Clouflares and Quad 9s.

Re: AOVPN Windows 10 connection issues.

I have spoken to the Trust's IT department and they've had a number of Plusnet users complaining about issues with VPN connectivity.

Is there any way to escalate this to a technical department at Plusnet?

Re: AOVPN Windows 10 connection issues.

Fix

I rang Plusnet and they have given me a new static IP in 80.229. range. This has resolved the problem.

Thanks for posting the fix, this may help others with a similar problem.
Hope you’ve closed the ports we opened...
