10% packet loss to Google IP's

Hi all,

I just noticed the other day that I'm getting around 10% of outbound ICMP packets dropped, but only when pinging Google IP's. I've tried google.com, google.co.uk and their DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4), all with same results.

At first I assumed it must be a Google issue, but if I disconnect my phone from WiFi the problem disappears.  A continuous inbound ping to my WAN IP also shows no packet loss at all.

To rule out my router and WiFi, I've also tested this patched directly into the modem via ethernet, and tried two different modems (ECI and Huawei HG612).

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

thanks

Danny

A lot of devices process ICMP echo pings at a lower priority than other packets. This can lead to poor response times and in some cases if the device is particularly busy no response at all. Ping is a useful diagnostic when it works but problems getting responses to ping requests is not in itself a problem. It seems curious that attaching your phone to your network affects ICMP but perhaps your phone does its own pinging and something, somewhere is limiting to you to a single continuous stream of pings. I think the bottom line though is just that responding to ping requests is optional and sometimes devices just can't be bothered Smiley

Re: 10% packet loss to Google IP's

Thanks for the reply Smiley

Sorry, I probably didn't word it very clearly, but all I meant with my mobile phone was that if I disconnect it from WiFi (so it's using 4G rather than going out through my router), then it shows no packet loss when pinging these Google IP's. So the issue is only with packets going out via Plusnet. Connecting my phone to my WiFi doesn't affect any of the other computers in the house.

I know what you're saying about packet priorities, but I'm not sure if that would completely explain for me why it's only occurring for these Google addresses. It's no biggie really, I'm just curious as much as anything, but can't help thinking it must be a Plusnet issue.

A Plusnet feature perhaps but I'm not sure if I'd class it as an issue. Still, now that I understand it does sound a bit odd. I can't see why the Plusnet network would choose to drop ICMP packets. Maybe it's one of their partners? What do you get with a traceroute to the IP address your pinging?

Re: 10% packet loss to Google IP's

I've always thought / found pings to google were pretty reliable and as such could be used as a good measure of the ISP's network / routing.
But I've just tried a ping test to the three google servers from my BT connection and I'm getting the same result as you. Shocked

Ping statistics for 8.8.8.8:
    Packets: Sent = 35, Received = 30, Lost = 5 (14% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 21ms, Maximum = 23ms, Average = 21ms

Ping statistics for 216.58.213.131: (google.co.uk)
    Packets: Sent = 36, Received = 32, Lost = 4 (11% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 21ms, Maximum = 23ms, Average = 21ms

Ping statistics for 216.58.213.142: (google.com)
    Packets: Sent = 46, Received = 41, Lost = 5 (10% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 21ms, Maximum = 33ms, Average = 22ms

I've also tried a few website based ping tests to google and none showed any packet loss.
Strange -- don't consider it to be anything to be concerned about just puzzled.

Re: 10% packet loss to Google IP's

Interesting, glad to hear it's not just me Smiley

I wonder if it's a routing issue on a particular PN gateway? According to the checker, I'm currently on psb-ir01. I'm sure when I last checked a few days ago I was still on one of the old gateways so must've been migrated recently.

Re: 10% packet loss to Google IP's

I'm experiencing the same thing, direct from my Cisco router I have a high packet loss to Google although not to BBC. I am also experiencing issues loading quite a number of websites. Not sure if there is a routing issue to the Akamai network.

Re: 10% packet loss to Google IP's

Good question, I do not know as at the moment most websites do not work. This site does but the main PlusNet and the user tools do no load along with loads of other websites. I can trace route to all the websites that I am having issues with but they simply do not lad. Tried adjusting my MTU settings too!

Sorry I can't help you with what gateway I am using!

Re: 10% packet loss to Google IP's

Again from by BT Fibre connection:

Tracert to the three google servers suggest the packet loss is at hop 7 (ip 195.99.126.185) on my test.

 Tracing route to google.com [216.58.208.142]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms ZyXEL.Home [192.168.1.1]
  2 * * * Request timed out.
  3 * * * Request timed out.
  4 22 ms 22 ms 21 ms 31.55.185.188
  5 22 ms 21 ms 21 ms core2-hu0-10-0-0.colindale.ukcore.bt.net [195.99.127.134]
  6 21 ms 21 ms 21 ms peer6-hu0-7-0-0.telehouse.ukcore.bt.net [62.172.103.15]
  7 * 21 ms 20 ms 195.99.126.185
  8 22 ms 21 ms 21 ms 72.14.233.201
  9 22 ms * 21 ms 216.239.43.211
 10 22 ms * * lhr25s08-in-f14.1e100.net [216.58.208.142]
 11 22 ms 22 ms 22 ms lhr25s08-in-f14.1e100.net [216.58.208.142]

I've done numerous tracert to the three servers, all go through this IP and this is the first hop which shows intermittent packet loss. Not conclusive but it's a fair bet this is where the issue starts.

Would be interesting to see a tracer from a Plusnet connection.

Note:

Whois says IP 195.99.126.185 belongs to "BT Public Internet Service".

Packet loss on ping doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem with other type of traffic.

Thanks, that's from Plusnets old network.
That looks like you're not getting any "ping" packet loss to google.

It gets even better over '6in4' tunneled IPv6 !, fewer hops AND lower latency  -

Re: 10% packet loss to Google IP's

I've yet to hear any explanation from Plusnet how using IPv6 encapsulated in an 6in4 tunnel over the same IPv4 network, can have 25% lower latency and 10% faster bandwidth, than the native IPv4 which carried it !.
