website using excessive bandwidth

I received an email yesterday that my little hobby website had exceed the daily transfer allowance by 78mb. I have written back humbly apologising (although how on earth I am supposed to be responsible for what everyone else on the internet does is a bit puzzling) but have had no reply and my website remains inactive. The idea of a daily allowance seems really ludicrous - I obviously dont get any credit for the months and months in which transfers are minimal'.

I have been a loyal Plusnet customer for many years and the website was a feature of the early packages. It's handy to have - but if this can't be resolved soon I will be forced to buy webspace elsewhere. My loyalty was reduced last year when Just the Name vanished. It is diminishing further.

Please can someone throw the switch and put it all back?

Re: website using excessive bandwidth

Hi there.
I'm sorry to hear this. I've raised a task with our dedicated e-mail/webspace team to investigate this for you. It should be picked up within the next 1-3 working days. Apologies for the inconvenience caused.

From 31st October 2022, I no longer have a regular presence here as I’ve moved on to a new role.

Re: website using excessive bandwidth

Thanks for your reply. I had earlier received a reply to my original ticket which suggested that the problem was not understood. I spoke to support this afternoon and the website has been approved to be "dearchived".

I don't understand why it needs a further 1-3 days. If the read-write block on the FTP server is removed then I can easily reload the entire site fairly quickly from a backup. Is there something massively technical about the archive process that needs specialists to reverse it?

Re: website using excessive bandwidth

The ticket on your account was waiting to be picked up by a specialist team to then raise a task with the relevant team (Who have access to the necessary systems/tools).

Ideally the support adviser from earlier today should/may have been able to raise the task themselves, but I’ve done that now so the ball is rolling.

I’m sorry again for this. Once the task is worked I should receive an email notification and I’ll come back here to double check with you everything is working OK.

Re: website using excessive bandwidth

Has a change you’ve made to the site introduced a large image / graphic file?

Re: website using excessive bandwidth

No. In fact the first reply I had from Plusnet was on the lines of "you've got plenty of disk space left so is there still a problem?". When I talked to support, I was given the impression that the "excessive use" flag  might have been a system-generated mistake but I have no stats on the usage (the site being archived and therefore no longer accessible) so cannot take this any further.

Re: website using excessive bandwidth

It’s not a matter of disk space. If you uploaded a hi-res picture of say 5MB (instead of scaling it for web use) viewing that one page just 16 times would blow your daily BANDWITH allowance for the site.

Re: website using excessive bandwidth

Yes, I fully understand that. The biggest file on my site was about 1.2mb and there are only five larger than 600kb. So either my site suddenly became amazingly popular (I should be so lucky) or something happened that cannot be explained without further info.
