reverse dns for static ip no longer possible?

Hi folks,

Our contract is ending soon, and we've been mostly happy with the service apart from one small issue that seems to only impact me when using VPNs and SSH. I've heard that switching to a static IP may resolve this, however I've been informed by customer services that the reverse dns cannot be changed from username.plus.com (I'm sure I read it could). Is this still the case?

I'd be pretty sure you got duff gen from the CSC agent. It's not something that they would be familiar with.

I'm sure one of the more experienced PN help team will be along shortly to assist...

Me: Are you able to set it to your-static-ip.plus.com please?
CSC: just had a look and no it will not allow it to be adjusted.

Me: So it's stuck as username.plus.com?
CSC: yes unfortunately

Me: Ah That is going to be a pain then.
CSC: do you want to add a static IP

Me: Not if it uses username.plus.com.

There's a wizard in the Help Assistant for it - log in to your account and click https://www.plus.net/wizard/?p=wizard&page=22425&wizard_id=38

The narrative says:

Changing Reverse DNS configuration
We can change your reverse DNS if you wish;

Alternative Reverse DNS options
The available rDNS configurations are:
username.plus.com (Default setting)
your-static-ip.plus.com (ie 212-159-0-2.plus.com)
any-host-name.domain.co.uk*
domain.co.uk*

Then there's an entry box further down the page to submit your choice.

When I did it I seem to remember you have to get the static IP enabled first then submit the rDNS request. The latter took a day or maybe two to process.

This can definitely be done - my apologies for the confusion.

If you add the static IP via the Member Centre and then check back in here we'll be able to get that sorted for you.

Thought I'd post an update after switching the static IP on!

I have to say it has made a big difference in the connection. SSH & VPN don't seem to be lagging anymore. I could be wrong but perhaps going via 1**.hiper04.sheff.dial.plus.net.uk was the issue before? Who knows, but anyway it's an improvement!
