"mutt" vanished.. how to email MIME data from .cgi script now?

I use the cgi service to run some shell and perl scripts. One of the shell scripts is invoked by cron and does a daily backup by emailing me a .gz of my site data.
I have just noticed that my daily emailed backup of my cgi are stopped.. two or so months ago. Root causes seem to me
1) the cron server no longer knows about my crontab (sigh)
2) the "mutt" binary no longer exists.
I thought I could replace mutt with mail but then I'd need to encode my .gz and.. there's no uuencode to do it with.
Can anyone suggest ways around these problems?
thanks,
Neal.

This in turn means that the tutorial here:

is out-of-date again after my updates from last year,
Neal.
