no-one can access my website that is on a domain hosted on plusnet. It worked unti 14 Oct 2025

Our Support Team have opened Question 251145592 to track an issue on your account.

I was advised by

<Redacted> from the "technical team" the best way to get the issue resolved was to post here. Apparently his team doesn't have the permissions to change the required settings.
THe domain is mcgregoropticians.co.uk
apparently, ( my IT advisor tells me) the problem is

The website still exists on your host (as of this morning at least), and nothing has changed for several weeks at my end. I was able to remotely access the website via an editing program and inspect the files as normal, although connection with the host seems inconsistent.

So, it seems apparent that a change or misconfiguration has occurred at your hosting provider - either an error on their part or (hopefully not) someone has got access to it that should not have.

Your domain is supposed to lead directly into the htdocs folder, using that as the root directory, but it is instead pointing to the parent directory. This suggests a misconfiguration has occurred. There may be a permissions error. It could be as simple as resetting the root directory to point to /htdocs.

I hope this will give enough information for someone from PlusNet to solve the problem.

@dave

Is this another hosting issue to review please... or just an empty website?

mcgregoropticians.co.uk points to 212.159.8.91 / 212.159.9.91

Which appears to redirect to www.mcgregoropticians.co.uk which points to...

Name: force9.static1.hostns.io
Address: 91.204.210.11
Aliases: www.mcgregoropticians.co.uk
homepages.force9.net
hp.force9.net

@Leanne_T

Can you please push this direct to the tech guys running with the mail service migration please?  I suspect that @dave is up to his ears with alligators elsewhere!

Hi @AMcG

That should be sorted now for you. They have advised, they have made a change in the DNS so the site may be a little intermittent for the next half an hour or so.

Thanks.

Leanne.

@Leanne_T

It would be good to know exactly what the team changed.  My DNS lookups (into Plusnet's DNS) are the same as yesterday.

Thank you for trying.

Re: no-one can access my website that is on a domain hosted on plusnet. It worked unti 14 Oct 2025

I see a directory listing (I did yesterday) but it is empty.

No one has clarified if the site really is empty or the URL is pointing to the wrong resource.

EDIT: Double checked - yes I do - someone must have just fixed it (following another flag-up)!

EDIT2: On reviewing my look ups, I can see that two IP addresses are being returned for the www. version - one is clearly right, the other looks suspect, so seeing the site correctly could be hit and miss.

Strange, I weas seeing it upto a few minutes ago but now it just looks like a empty site.

The site should really be moved, It's a very professional site but with no HTTPS security.

Just to confirm my sighting the Opticians are in a place reknowned for producing footballers.

**Edit : Back up again

You are experiencing the confused state of the DNS resolution for the URL...

> www.mcgregoropticians.co.uk
Server: ordns.he.net
Address: 2001:470:20::2

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: force9.static1.hostns.io
Addresses: 91.204.210.11
212.159.8.90
Aliases: www.mcgregoropticians.co.uk
homepages.force9.net
hp.force9.net

212 is correct, 91 is not.

@Leanne_T I'm neither of those mentioned, but I can confirm the site now appears to load correctly. FYI, though, I am not on a Plusnet connection.

Fix

@Leanne_T

I checked late last night; eventually the DNS resolution delivered a single IP address - the one on Plusnet’s platform.

Thank you for the follow-up, but more importantly detailing the cause of the issue.  Such insights enable the community to grow it’s self help capabilities.
