My contract ends on 14 Dec 25. Plusnet will cease to provide my landline on 1st Jan 26. I want to switch to another supplier (not EE). What is the earliest date I can switch to that new supplier without incurring penalty charges. I need my landline because I am elderly and live in a fairly remote area.

As you pay a month in advance for your phone and internet contract, you will have paid up to its end, therefore you can find another provider at any time.
Note though that whoever you move to needs to be able to provide a 'digital' phone service, as the traditional copper based landline service is currently scheduled to be closed down January 2027 anyway.

Hi @mopfe
Just to add to the above comments,
We require 14 days' notice in order to cancel a residential account and 28 days' notice to cancel a business account. The notice can be provided either by notifying us directly via phone or in writing, or if you're moving to another provider, we will accept that provider's order notification as notice.
The notice period starts from the time we receive the cancellation request. If the cancellation request is withdrawn for any reason during the notice period, a new request needs to be made, and a new notice period will commence.
When a cancellation is requested, we will schedule this to take place at the end of the notice period. However, if this date falls on a weekend, the cancellation will be scheduled for the next working day.
For a cease of service, as opposed to moving to another provider, it is possible to:
- Specify a cancellation date after the notice period. In this case, a one-off payment will be taken at the time the account is scheduled for cancellation.
This payment will include all subscription charges up until the end of the requested period, and no further subscription charges will be payable.
Although you will still have to pay for usage charges and any additional services (such as any chargeable calls you make before the account is cancelled) once the account is closed; or
- close an account sooner than the notice period. In this event, any payments due up until the end of the notice period will be required as a final one-off payment before the account closure can be scheduled.

Plusnet will cease to provide my landline on 1st Jan 26
Have Plusnet actually told you that ? or are you just referring to the general BT information regarding changing people to digital voice ?
Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Good point @MisterW - I did wonder. In any case, the PSTN service will disappear fairly soon - whoever currently 'provides' it.

True, but the decision for @mopfe may not be as urgent as thought...

Thank you everyone for replying. To answer a query, Plusnet advised me that it will cease to supply my landline service on 1 Jan 2026. I have found a supplier who will supply a voip landline including anytime calls and international calls which is 20% lower than EE's quote. Please forgive any infelicities in my writing, English is my 4th language.

@mopfe It would be interesting to know how Plusnet advised you they would be ceasing to supply your landline service on that date - I don't think we have seen anyone else receiving that information.
Good to hear you have resolved the issue, though.

Talk to Customer Service about your own specific situation and make sure you find out the correct dates and the impact on you and your current contract for both broadband internet and also your landline number phone.
Be careful with exactly what service is being stopped.
Many people say "landline" referring to the geographical phone number 01xxx xxxxxx. Some people refer to the same thing even when it is provided over a digital product, such as you have found from another cheaper provider. This is generically called VoIP, and many providers (BT, EE, others) call it Digital Voice.
PlusNet has said it will not be providing that sort of voice over digital service.
Whatever you do, take the utmost care if you plan to move your geographical phone number away from PlusNet if your broadband service also is also from the landline's phone socket. Moving the number will inadvertently cancel both your number and your broadband service, because the two are fundamentally tied together. This could result in early termination charges.
PlusNet is not ceasing "landlines as they are today" yet (the old analogue landline number service) — that will happen for everyone in the UK by 31st January 2027.
It is possible than some people in some areas are moving their broadband internet to an all-digital service by a fixed date and an old-style phone service is not available after that. Perhaps this is why you have been told 1st January 2026. It was the deadline until May last year when the deadline was postponed by thirteen months to 31st January 2027.
So talk to Customer Service about your own situation.

I tried to trace how Plusnet informed me that it was ending my landline service on 1st Jan 26. I cannot find that, at present. I will keep looking. Given that my Plusnet will end on 14th Dec, my plan is to ask my proposed new broadband and telephone supplier to start on 30th Nov as Plusnet require 14 days notice. I hope my writing makes sense!

Good to hear you are planning in detail. Check with your new provider that they know when to switch different parts without cancelling your PlusNet contract two weeks too soon. If PlusNet are prepared to give you an end-date which works with your contract-end notice period, then you will be satisfied.

"We require 14 days' notice in order to cancel a residential account and 28 days' notice to cancel a business account."
I thought Plusnet had ceased/terminated business accounts some time ago?
If I am mistaken, please bring me up to speed on this.

Out if interest, how many business accounts do Plusnet have now? I'm curious because I understood Plusnet closed all business accounts as of the 28th May 2024.

Be gentle chaps - this was probably a tri-brand mindset response. The tetchy comments add no value here.
The forum coverage is not being provided by dedicated Plusnet staff but by a tri-brand forum triage team. Not what we are used to, but better presence than what we became used to.
Shoot folks for every non-significant (in context) mistake and they’ll stop bothering to try at all.
