[PAYH] is PlusNet's Sister company and it is a different platform as well.
Use PlusNet's it will do what you want and it is Free, PAYH is not Free unless you signed up for it while the trial was on!

Re: Web site creation from scratch!

Thanks, Midnight Caller. I think you are right. But it means I have to get to grips with web editing after six years away ...
I tried copying and pasting "source code" off a host site with my text editor and then viewing with my browser. It did NOT display. And I could NOT edit the source code with my text editor! So I guess they have ways of stopping you "stealing" their templates and bypassing their charges by putting their designs on free web space.
All the stuff on the web about the book I am publishing stem from me & are placed there by either Internet resellers or by the RN Museum who have kindly offered to host a book launch.

PS I do like the "RETIRED" signature: I was tired yesterday and tired again today! Now how do I "pinch" that for my own use?

Re: Web site creation from scratch!

OK, I have created a very basic HOME PAGE on my Apple Mac with KompoZer and now need to:
- redirect from domain name on 123.reg to Plusnet
- upload page onto Plusnet
- create mailboxes
Do I do all this in the above order?
I know it's simple but ....

Re: Web site creation from scratch!

Hi Bill
Wen you change the nameservers to:
ns1.force9.net
ns2.force9.net
Then let PlusNet know by Opening a Ticket with Technical Support.  The domain name will be available to you from PlusNet for your Web space and eMails.
[Edit]
But wile you are waiting for the change over you can upload your site to your web space on PlusNet, so that you are ready to go live with your site.

Re: Web site creation from scratch!

Well, I have entered the domain name server transfer request  onto my 123.reg control panel.
And notified Technical Support at Plusnet.
123.reg say they take between 24 - 48 hours
And Plusnet take 16 hours to deal with my request
So am hoping they will overlap!
Now all I have to do is upload my "Home Page" using the FTP s/ware in KompoZer.
I bet that's easier said than done!

Re: Web site creation from scratch!

How long does it take for a  page to appear on the Plusnet server?
I "published" using the KompoZer FTP facility thirty minutes ago but at the "username" site I get this message:
This web address has not yet had a web page uploaded to it. If this is your web space and would like to know how to start building your website, you'll find lots of help from the PlusNet technical support section [more]

Re: Web site creation from scratch!

Have you replaced the index file in the htdocs folder with your own?

Re: Web site creation from scratch!

It takes just minutes, your main page must be "index.html" in lower case.
Hope this helps

Re: Web site creation from scratch!

Well, I'm obviously doing something wrong.
I have been trying to follow Midnight Caller's instructions as below:
For PlusNet to:
Upload ftp://username:password@ftp.plus.net/htdocs/  for using your web Browser such as Internet Explorer v6
Web Site http://www.username.plus.com/
But the entry form on KompoZer is rather different.
I have given the Home Page the name: index.html
as advised.
But its not being published so I guess I'm doing something stupid - but what?
Anybody care to try & put me right?

Re: Web site creation from scratch!

The following works with Windows XP and Vista, not sure about other operating systems.
I suggest you open Windows Explorer (*not* Internet Explorer) and type ftp://homepages.plus.net or ftp://ftp.plus.net on its address line (both addresses lead to the same place, some find the 'homepages' style having just the one 'ftp' less confusing). This should bring up a dialogue box requesting your Plusnet username and password. Enter these and you should see the top level of your webspace containing the /htdocs/ folder.
Double-click that and you should see your index.html file. If it's not there publishing using KompoZer obviously didn't work, possibly due to incorrect settings.
An alternative way of publishing it is to copy and paste between folder displays using Windows Explorer.

Re: Web site creation from scratch!

For Kompozer, you enter the http address as http://www.username.plus.com/ (replacing username) and the publishing address as ftp://ftp.plus.net/htdocs/
The username and password are as for the Plusnet portal login.

Re: Web site creation from scratch!

Well that seem clear BUT
1. My domain name (Holywellhousepublishing.co.uk) can not be located by Google anymore so has, presumably, been removed from 123.reg but NOT put up on Plusnet.
2. Still can't FTP the file successfully!!

BUT the KompoZer HELP pages give lots of complicated instructions on settings!

Not quite sure what to do next ... wait for Plusnet?
Or is the reason I cant locate the page because there is NO page until I FTP it to the site!?

Re: Web site creation from scratch!

Looks like either you've just worked it out, or someone's done it for you, because your page is accessible.  Smiley

Re: Web site creation from scratch!

I see that you have successfully uploaded your home page at: http://www.forsterbalcke.plus.com ; If you need any more help just shout up!
You will need to wait 24h for all the DNS servers to cach up with your domain name: http://www.holywellhousepublishing.co.uk
I just done a WHOIS lookup on your domain name and it is looking good.
