Web Site Archived!

My website has been Archived for exceeding bandwidth - never happened before!
www.holywellhousepublishing.co.uk
What is my band width allowance?
Why am I so popular all of a sudden!
How do I find out if pages are being hot linked?
Or is there another explanation?
And why does Plusnet cut you off without offering any advice or help in solving the problem?
Bill

Re: WEB SITE ARCHIVED!

Hi Bill,
Your bandwidth allowance is 100MB per day.
It is not easy for you to establish who is linking to your site without a webstats application. I have added our own webstats solution to your account which will take up to 24 hours to activate. When it's ready, the feature will be accessible via the 'Standard Webspace' section of the Member Centre.
Another possibility is that you have uploaded and subsequently downloaded a large file (or files) from your webspace that has taken you over your bandwidth quota.
Our automated process favours the immediate protection of the platform over any sort of advanced notice. I'm sorry if it's caused inconvenience. You should have received an email though?
I have unarchived your site so it should be accessible again.

Re: WEB SITE ARCHIVED!

The builders are in trying to stop my house falling down - subsidence - and now my web site collapses!
Thanks for the rapid response.
I do have Web Free Stats which has become totally unreliable.
And does not appear to show most "popular" pages.
And could never find how to "switch on" web stats at Plusnet.
It's quite alarming to find ones web site vanishes - without any ADVANCE warning.
Just an auto er-mail. No help, advice or whatever.
But I do appreciate YOU coming to the rescue.
Shall try & find the cause ...

Re: WEB SITE ARCHIVED!

Would accesses via my web site on Plusnet to audio files on my Dropbox account register against my band width allowance?
If they do that might explain my going over my 100 Mgb daily allowance.
But if they don't then I am at a loss to understand how this could happen.

Re: Web Site Archived!

A quick look at your website shows that one of the pictures on the front page is around 360K in size and is downscaled on the screen - this could be resampled and reduced in size to a much smaller image. You also have a link to a .pdf which is another 270K in size. Between the two of these that is 0.5Mb in download size.
If you have search engines indexing the page / downloading the .pdf etc you could soon end up running out of steam.
On the Hard Fought Ship page, the book cover is nearly 1Mb on its own - added to the other pictures on that page and less than 100 page hits on that page in 24 hours would kill your bandwidth allowance.
Hope that helps

Re: Web Site Archived!

Don't know how you calculate those figures, Dom.
THE BOOK COVER ON FRONT PAGE
File size is 127 Kb - so a long way from being a Mgb

But I have to admit to nor knowing I had a limit on band width.
I thought I was only limited to 100 Mgb for the size of my site.
And as a result kept an eye on that.
But ignored bandwidth.
It may take a while to check this out.
And also to decide what to do.
Am told it's foolish to to host a web site with one's ISP - as it tends to tie you down if you need to change.
Would all of you agree?
And does Plusnet have other  clients who do both?
Have web space AND have Plusnet as ther ISP?
Or am I the only one.
Please let me know.
Bill

Re: Web Site Archived!

Opening that 377K image in Corel Photopaint, resampling to 267x401 pixels reduces the size down to 49K
Not sure if you removed the other large image as I can't spot it to resample but I've attached a lower resolution image for your first page if it you want to use it.

Re: Web Site Archived!

Found it !
http://www.holywellhousepublishing.co.uk/webimages/xxx.jpg
889.84 KB (911,200 bytes)
If someone viewed that 100 times in a day it could push you over your limit.
Resampled it reduces to 46K - that is around 1/20th of the size (I've attached the resampled image)
These seem the main offenders.

Re: Web Site Archived!

The image on my MacBook was only 127 Kb.
And have just sent it to the server by FileZila.
Please check and let me know if the one on the server is NOW only 127 kb.
It's possible I may have reduced  its size a year or two - or three - back.
But forgot to ftp the small version to the server.
Please let me know.

Re: Web Site Archived!

They both appear to be the same as before despite a refresh and trying in another browser.
The 40 years at sea cover on the front page is still saving through IE11 (and Firefox) as a 377kb (ish) file and the HFScoverBIG.jpg is still around 900K in size
I'm being moaned at by the wife that it is time for bed now otherwise I'd investigate a bit more but hopefully another member / staff can verify this.

Re: Web Site Archived!

Thanks for your help, Dom.
And apologies to your wife.
It seems that when I reduced the file size I (slightly) changed the file name.
I changed BIG to Big.
And as a result since I did not change the link it continued to point at BIG - which as you pointed out is VERY BIG!
I have changed that now.
But still need to look at the other cover image.
It has an ISBN (numeric) as the file name.
And I can't at present LOCATE IT!

Re: Web Site Archived!

I've edited the link above so it doesn't go to the BIG one any more (just in case the search engines follow the link and your site gets zapped again !).
It might be worth renaming or removing it from your site just in case any historical searches or links still access it and suck your bandwidth Smiley
I remember when a post of mine went viral (a homebuilt washing machine running Windows) the site it was posted on experienced a hundred times the the traffic overnight and it almost killed the host that the pictures were hosted on  Grin

Re: Web Site Archived!

BIg and BIG are now both the same size, Dom.
But shall delete Big and just leave BIG.

Still puzzled as to whether when I signed up with Plusnet they had a limit on band width.
Or just the limit on the size of web site.
Until now I thought the only restraint was on the size of the web site & I am still well within that.

Do you pay for web hosting or get it for free?
And if you pay what attracted you to Plusnet?
I joined because they had san excellent reputation as an ISP.
And then when I needed web space found they provided it for free.
But they were independent then - not just part of BT - and I have cable under the pavement outside our terraced house.
But, can't stand the hassle of making the move ...
