Trying to use .htaccess file to block undesirable traffic

This is driving me nuts! Crazy I have been trying to use an .htaccess file to block bad bots and undesirable traffic (my site's gone over its bandwidth because of a recent spate of site ripping) but I just keep getting a 500 Internal Server Error whenever I upload it. The .htaccess file works file when its just set up to customize my 404 page. This is the code I've been trying to use, if anyone could spot where I might be going wrong I'd be soooo grateful!

Re: Trying to use .htaccess file to block undesirable traffic

I am no expert (and that's putting it mildly) but the one thing I might try is the last line the regex you have ^.* might need to be ^.*$ the latter means match the entire url the ^ means the beginning and the $ means the end and the .* means zero or more of any character (sorry if that's an egg sucking lesson). Not sure what ^.* would match without the $.
As I say i am no expert at .htaccess, so that may be a complete red herring.

Re: Trying to use .htaccess file to block undesirable traffic

The code looks ok to me.
What did you use to generate the .htaccess? It must be plain text (ASCII) otherwise you will get those internal server errors.
@gilbertG, it will still match, though the ^ is superfluous, just .* would do. ^.* just means "zero or more of any character from the start of the input".

Re: Trying to use .htaccess file to block undesirable traffic

Thank you both for your help!
Ben - I think you hit the nail on the head. I'd copied the code from an example given on a website and think maybe it didn't copy as 'clean' ASCII to wordpad. I recopied it to notepad, ignored the fact it now had no linebreaks and re-uploaded that, and all seems to be well now - no 500 errors. Thanks!
