Re: Switch to Fiber and keep (for now) PSTN line

So I intended to keep BT's PSTN for now and switch later to VOIP ?   But do not seem to have that option , do I ?

Re: Switch to Fiber and keep (for now) PSTN line

terminating ADSL would terminate the phone-line

@jab1 If the ADSL broadband is with PLusnet and the phone service with BT, then terminating the ADSL SHOULDN'T cease the phone.

@mamoeller However, upgrading the PLusnet ADSL broadband account to Full fibre is likely to do a 'change of ownership cease' on the phone line and so remove any phone service.

i SUSPECT the best way forward would be to order Full fibre from Plusnet as a new customer, requesting the 'keep existing services with current provider' and then once the Full fibre is installed, cancel the ADSL broadband on the old account leavin (hopefully?) the phone service still live with BT.

TBH I'd consider moving the phone service to voip rather than retain the BT phone service. AfterFull fibre is installed , porting the phone number wil cease the landline and ADSL service anyway.

The down side of the new account option is that you would lose any Plusnet email facilities as well as any domains and webspace associated with the old account.

You cannot keep a phone service if you switch to Full Fibre - I don't think - but hopefully @MisterW  will confirm this.

Re: Switch to Fiber and keep (for now) PSTN line

@MisterW The BTw checker result posted by the OP suggests they are on FTTC - I see no ADSL speeds?

Re: Switch to Fiber and keep (for now) PSTN line

@jab1 you are correct, for ADSL read FTTC. It makes little difference, if losing email isnt a problem for @mamoeller then going the 'new ciustomer' route (if its still possible?) is the safest way forward.

Looking at moving the phone to voip is also a good idea since sooner of later BT are going to try moving it to their Digital voice which will get complicated.

Re: Switch to Fiber and keep (for now) PSTN line

@mamoeller

As stated an FTTP installation isn't quite straight forward. A bit of digging will be required. The Checker results show "KCI2" which basically means a survey is required first. If you are around when the survey is done you can talk about the install and where the ONT will go - especially if you'd like to have it some place else (if possible, installers try and work with you).

The Exchange is a Fibre Priority Ex so no other orders will be taken apart for Full Fibre unless FF is not available for the property.

If you choose to start as a new customer you lose e-mails and any other add on you may have when you close the original account.

Finally, even if you choose to hang fire for the moment you should research VOIP so you have a good idea of what you want when the time comes to move.

Re: Switch to Fiber and keep (for now) PSTN line

@MisterW , @jab1 Thank you both for your information.

So I will have to move earlier to VOIP (i.e. figuring out how to connect  my 3 phones on the house's PSTN network to VOIP) as changing emails is also not an easy option.

So only as a real new customer w/o ADSL, etc you may keep the PSTN line.

Re: Switch to Fiber and keep (for now) PSTN line

This thread is getting difficult to follow but to throw more confusion into the mix:

In the past we have been advised that cancelling a FTTC service will automatically cancel the landline service, regardless iof whether the phone element is provided by Plusnet or still with BT.

Re: Switch to Fiber and keep (for now) PSTN line

@Baldrick1 Yes that is exactly the issue. I have a contract with BT for my Phone and a contract with PN for my ADSL and I only want to change my PN contract from ADSL to FTTP.  There seem to be some strange contract dependencies I as a customer of both "suffer" under.

@mamoeller i.e. figuring out how to connect  my 3 phones on the house's PSTN network to VOIP

If you use an ATA (Analogue telephone adapter ) then you can connect it to the (now unused) master socket and inject the voice signal back intto your existing extension telephone wiring https://support.aa.net.uk/VoIP_How_to:_Voice_reinjection

Re: Switch to Fiber and keep (for now) PSTN line

@mamoeller that guide assumes the incoming line is still to be used for broadband (SoGEA). With FTTP the incoming line can be disconnected at the master socket since its no longer used at all. I'm fairly sure that in that case you don't need to modify the faceplate at all...

As for the problems with alarms. AFAIK the problems are mainly with some old personal safety alarms, security systems these days can use IP and/or GSM so should be fine

Re: Switch to Fiber and keep (for now) PSTN line

@mamoeller

The PN Hub2 phone port does not function so as stated you need an ATA (or purchase a router with an in built one). So long as the incoming copper cable from the Exchange is disconnected then the house extensions should work.

Plenty of How To guides on the internet.
