Setting up a forum in my web

I want to set up a forum within my site and note the posts in this community site for phpbb.  Is this the best open software forum that works on the plus net cgi and mysql platforms or is there an alternative I should be looking at.
Does phpbb have the look and feel of a dedicated forum - i.e. no banner ads etc. Has anyone set up a public forum using this combination that I can go and have a look at.
Many thanks

Re: Setting up a forum in my web

A lot of people are now using the same software as these forums - SMF. There's links at the very bottom of every page in here.

Area51 is the development board for phpBB, but it lets you get an idea of what is going on with it.

Re: Setting up a forum in my web

I've just taken down my SMF powered site and put up a PHP-Fusion based site.  IMO it's much easier to install and maintain.
Check PHP-fusion out at http://www.php-fusion.co.uk
