Re: Service showing as outside UK

You should try Netflixes support chat if you want a truly teeth gritting experience
They say it’s all the ISP and they need to reset their internet and DNS connections. Refuse to escalate and refuse to admit they might be talking guff. I had one tell me he was going to escalate it and then timed out the chat
I genuinely thought he was AI he was so nonsensical

I'm assuming in terms of getting this sorted PlusNet are in contact with Netflix et al? This is what is recommended on Netflix's help page-

https://help.netflix.com/en/node/26100

This is the problem in a nutshell. Netflix says contact your ISP. The only way that the ISP can get the problem rectified is to contact Netflix etc. and either ask them to get Geolocation database that they are using corrected, or give Plusnet the database provider’s contact details so that they can make direct contact. Then there will be an investigation by the database provider before the change is implemented.

This isn’t just a case of Plusnet flicking a switch at their end.

Thanks Baldrick, I figured as much. Given the issues some have had trying to get Netflix to do something, I'm more confident PlusNet will get somewhere with it. I hope.

Re: Service showing as outside UK

You can understand what Netflix (and others) are saying though, they've not changed anything, Plusnet has.

If Plusnet hadn't made the change by allocating the (new) IP addresses then we would all be fine and no conection issues. This is 100% Plusnet!!  They should have anticipated potientially issue(s), before implementing the change!

I've still not got any access to streaming sites, and I had to change to 4G to make a payment via banking app this morning :@

Re: Service showing as outside UK

Very sorry @SteveTownsend , but you are totally wrong. The transfer of IP blocks between countries has been going on for a long time, and it is up to Netflix (and others) to ensure they are using up-to-date location services.

Plusnet (or any other ISP) can't influence the behaviour of content providers, or banks - even if they could guess which IP location service they might use.

@SteveTownsend

To turn your argument around. I would expect Netflix et al to be responsible for making sure that the IP geolocation database that they use is up to date, so that they can provide their service to their customers.

Have you tried dropping your connection as advised to see if you can pick up a different IP address.

Re: Service showing as outside UK

Same issue here. Only resolved (temporarily) after a one hour call with Disney + who added/changed my current IP to appear as a UK origin (I think).
Interesting quite how this might get resolved in the long run (so I can continue to watch Alien Earth! 😂).

Same problem here too. Currently got the router switched off and will see if it picks up a UK IP.

Re: Service showing as outside UK

I e tried turning off router for whole night, tried again 2 days later for 2 hours. Even tried a reset as suggested by Plusnet.
I still get an ip in the 150.xxx.xxx range that comes up as USA in iplocate.
Nothing else I can do other than wait.

Re: Service showing as outside UK

you have to wonder why streaming sites need to know where you are ?

Could it be for financial gain, surely not a multi tier pricing system ?

Re: Service showing as outside UK

It’s because of deals done in local regions for content
For example US and Europe don’t get WWE Smackdown but we get it here in the UK
There are other shows that we don’t get here
Also regional variations of tv shows that have British commentary rather than the US version

@Cabicular Thanks, didn't know about regional progs. My comments were based mainly on Film & TV Series.

Okay, but it's not just streaming sites that are affected. Hopefully it will be resolved before long and won't reoccur

Indeed, it will impact any service provider taking their geolocation data from the ONE provider who has the location data wrong.  If they used any of the other 10 providers users would not be encountering this issue.

The response to any provider wishing to blame the ISP should be “Of all of the geolocation data providers have YOU chosen the one which is out of step with every other provider?“.

Absolutely. And yet if you talk to Netflix I doubt they will listen or accept that.

And yet if you talk to Netflix I doubt they will listen or accept that.

Then maybe the answer is for everyone to raise a formal complaint to Netflix (and others) that they are depriving you of a service you have paid for by incorrectly locating your assigned IP address as not UK-Based
