Question regarding Mail and Plesk?

Im considering offering a friends website via the plesk hosting package I have.
Im wondering how the mail is likely to be affected, if at all?
Is the mail setup at the ISP end or at the website host end?
Lets say his ISP is BT/AOL/Orange, but the webhost is now going to be Plesk/PAYH, what will happen to the mail, am I likely to need to create new accounts to match his existing?

Re: Question regarding Mail and Plesk?

Hi
If you have a full PAYH service and change the name servers to PAYH when you add the domain, then you will control the email accounts via PAYH so will need to setup the mail accounts.

Re: Question regarding Mail and Plesk?

thanks Kev.
Do you know where I can find details of the mail pop3 connection settings?
Im assuming, my friend will have to adjust his pop3 to match plesk, but leave his SMTP settings to match his ISP.

Re: Question regarding Mail and Plesk?

Hi
The incoming mail server will be mail.domain name
The username will be the full email address
The password will be the password that you set up for the mailbox
For the outgoing server you have the option of using your ISP's or you can use ours, although if you do use ours then it will use your monthly data transfer allowance.
The outgoing server if you opt for ours is mail.domain name and you will need to ensure that you authenticate with your email address and password.

Re: Question regarding Mail and Plesk?

Thanks Kev.
Another last question, what about FTP access for my friend?
It would appear you can only add "web users", but this doesnt appear to give FTP access to allow file transfer to/from the domain.
If I have a hosting package, it would appear you cant give out multiple ftp details per domain, only 1 ftp account per plesk account?

Re: Question regarding Mail and Plesk?

Hi
For each domain that is added it will have its own FTP account, unfortunately you are unable to have more than 1 FTP account per domain name.

Re: Question regarding Mail and Plesk?

I see now Kev. That makes sense.
What is the web users for? Ive created one with my friends name, and It wont even let me login to plesk with those details, which makes me wonder what its for?
Is it possible to create a login for plesk for my friends domain?

Re: Question regarding Mail and Plesk?

Hi
The web users is so that your customers / friends can log in.
When they get to the Plesk login screen, the user name will be the full domain name and the password will be the one you set up and once logged in they will only be able to see their own domain.

Re: Question regarding Mail and Plesk?

Note also that if you friend uses his own ISP to send mail and wants to use the PAYH-assigned domain name as part of the email address (e.g. fred@yourdomain.co.uk), then he/she may well need to jump through some additional hoops to persuade his ISP that the foreign domain name is kosher and you are not mail relaying. BT for example insist that you register* the names of such foreign domain names with them if you send mail via your BTCONNECT or BTINTERNET account.
* - not domain name registration in the normal sense - just a BT admin process

Re: Question regarding Mail and Plesk?

Thanks for the help.
Upon creating the mail accounts I get:
Quote
Warning: The messages addressed to adam_venn@mydomain.co.uk will not be delivered, as this mail account does not have a mailbox or mail forwarder switched on.

and
Quote
Information: The mail account adam_venn@pumpcontroller.co.uk has been created

Can anyone tell me what the warning relates to? This mailbox will not be created/appear in the manage mail section?
