Re: Prevention of the exceeding of allotted bandwidth.

On my sites anyone who strays off the approved route gets sent back to the start :

#### Custom Error ####
ErrorDocument 400 /index.htm
ErrorDocument 401 /index.htm
ErrorDocument 403 /index.htm
ErrorDocument 404 /index.htm
ErrorDocument 500 /index.htm
ErrorDocument 502 /index.htm
ErrorDocument 504 /index.htm

It is tempting to send them somewhere else, no suggestions please.....

@kaspencer 's problem is that they can try to lock and secure the front door but that doesn't stop visitors trying to get in and that's where the bandwidth is being used. That will change when they moves to a different hosting platform.

In practice i find

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

in the robots.txt will eventually reduce the number of inquisitive visitors.

Re: Prevention of the exceeding of allotted bandwidth.

@Baldrick1 Thanks - I know that fairly soon my sites will move to a new web host, and that the issue of bandwidth will no longer be quite as significant as it is now.

Re: Prevention of the exceeding of allotted bandwidth.

@mikeb Thanks, Mike, for that very helpful reply.

Although I have had a .htaccess file for quite sometime (and on the sites which I operate from my office, your post contains some useful pointers.

No need to worry about sucking eggs: I'm very happy to ignore what is known already and stick with the stuff that helps!

Excellent reply!
