Plusnet and Dreamweaver Databases

We are trying to set up a database driven site on plusnet hosting and have been unable to connect to the mysql database using dreamweaver.
After setting up the tables in the database, we then entered the details that were emailed to us into dreamweaver but it keeps coming up with a 500 error code when trying to display the tables.
Any ideas as to how this can be solved? Btw, we have connected to the server using dreamweavers FTP, it is just the database connection where we have the problem.

I imagine this is not a database issue, more likely to be incorrect file permissions or a .htaccess file with disallowed options.
How you checked the advice given in the cgi platform php upgrade faq?
