Photo gallery for image hosting site needed

I want to set up an online gallery with about 5000 images.
I tried to download Coppermine which looked promising but my ftp doesnt appear to be able to handle it as when I try to upload it and many files failed
Also being something of a novice with php I am a bit confused about the what appears to be a complicated setup process where it needs permissions set up etc.
Could anyone recommend a good, free and simple to use program similar to Coppermine?

I don't know about Coppermine as I haven't used it but jAlbum may do what you want http://jalbum.net/en/

I've found Gallery2 and Gallery3 do the job well enough.
Gallery3 is a lot simpler to set up than its predecessor.
