PC connects to router but not Internet, wifi doesnt have valid IP config error in windows 10.

PC is connected to router but no internet access, all other devices connecting ok (phone, doorbell, tv's etc)

windows 10 error - "wifi" doesn't have valid IP configuration,

tried Ethernet cable "ethernet doesnt have valid IP configuration,

reloaded wifi driver, no good,

swapped wifi card, no card (my card worked ok in another PC)

system restore, no good,

checkdisc/r no good,

reset network on PC, no good

tried various command prompts related to windows 10 error above (ipconfig etc), no good.

Found that my PC address assignment in the router in set to Static with an IP address of 0.0.0.0, all other ok devices are set to DHCP,

IP assignment in my PC is set to automatic (DHCP),

Factory reset the router (plusnet hub two), no good.

tried a different plusnet hub two router, no good

Any help would be greatly appreciated (I hate computers...)

@philipdhedley To clarify , are you saying that the router is set to give the PC a fixed address of 0.0.0.0 OR the router is showing the PC connected with a static IP of 0.0.0.0 ?

I suspect the latter, in which case it would appear to be a PC problem. Are you sure that both the wired and wireless network interfaces (NIC) are set to DHCP ?

Thanks for your reply.

To be honest, I'm not sure. I would have thought the router should be assigning an IP address for the PC but it's set to Static for some reason. Ethernet and WIFI IP assignment are both set to Automatic (DHCP).

Re: PC connects to router but not Internet, wifi doesnt have valid IP config error in windows 10.

I would have thought the router should be assigning an IP address for the PC but it's set to Static for some reason.

The router doesnt set the IP as static. It will set a fixed IP (but using DHCP) if the 'always use this IP' is set.

The router is showing the IP as 0.0.0.0 static because that's the IP address its 'seeing' from the PC.

I must say, I've never seen anything like that before. It would appear that the PC isnt requesting an IP using DHCP for whatever reason? Is there anything in either the router log (Troubleshooting->Event log) or the Windows event log that might give a clue as to whats happening ?

@philipdhedley

Have you checked the PC IP settings? For Windows see: https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/how-to-configure-a-static-ip-on-windows-10-o.... and check that it's set to Auto.

Re: PC connects to router but not Internet, wifi doesnt have valid IP config error in windows 10.

I've just checked something suggested by Baldrick1 re assigning the IP address manually however my PC doesn't have a IP address displayed under Ethernet or WIFI.

Curiouser and curiouser...

Re: PC connects to router but not Internet, wifi doesnt have valid IP config error in windows 10.

Has you PC got IPV4 enabled on the network adapters ?

Normally if DHCP fails the PC would get an APIPA address in the 169.254.. subnet. I've never seen a 0.0.0.0 address.

Is it possible that the PC only has IPV6 enabled ?

Sometime using ipconfig /all in a command prompt is the way forward

Ethernet and WIFI are both set to Automatic (DCHP), however the article you linked switching from a dynamic to a static IP address. I thought Id give this a try to see if it connects but I don't have a IPv4 addresses displayed for wifi or ethernet.

I've checked the properties for wifi and ethernet and IPv4 is enabled for both,

I've just checked that for WIFI and Ethernet, they're both enabled.

@philipdhedley what do you see when you look at the adapter properties

something like this ?

network_1.png

and if you then double click the IPV4 ?

These are my laptop, I compared them with my PC earlier and they were the same. I think the next screen was also the same. My PC is doing another chkdisk/r and it will be a while. I'll confirm as soon as its done.

Re: PC connects to router but not Internet, wifi doesnt have valid IP config error in windows 10.

@philipdhedley

You are connecting this PC directly to one of the LAN ports of the Hub Two not via a device (switch, powerline adapters) to the port marked a WAN? (WAN port is for a connection to a modem device ONLY.)

@MisterW

BTW the Hub Two event logs is found in >Advanced Settings >Technical log >Event log

That's really weird...

I have a Plusnet Hub 2 router and no such page appears on my router settings. 😮

My equivalent page to what is shown (going by the tab setting): Home::Advanced settings::My network::My devices

is quite different. It shows a 'map' of the router and its Ethernet ports, wireless and USB port. Below that is a list of my devices and their connection status plus IP and Mac addresses.

My router Firmware versionv0.10.00.04201-PN

Doesn't that also show the PC with an IPv6 address? If so, no wonder there is no connection to the Internet as Plusnet doesn't support IPv6.

What shows on your tab: Home::Advanced settings::My network::IPv4 configuration ?
