PAYH, Plusnet hosted domain, Mail MX record

Hi Community,
I recently registered a domain name (animetrader.co.uk) with PlusNet and followed the instructions in the tutorial to add a domain alias to the PAYH platform to serve web traffic.
Since I've added the alias I can no longer send mail to any of the mailboxes I have setup in the Email settings -> Manage My Mail control panel of the member centre.
This was all A.O.K until I created the alias.
The bounce message I get back details:
<websales@animetrader.co.uk>:
84.92.2.97 does not like recipient.
Remote host said: 550 #5.1.0 Address rejected websales@animetrader.co.uk

Is there anything special I need to do either in the Plesk control panel or DNS to get mail flowing again?
Thank for reading

Re: PAYH, Plusnet hosted domain, Mail MX record

A little more digging - yeah shoot first ask questions later!
Seems in Plesk that there IS an MX record for animetrader.co.uk. pointing to mail.animetrader.co.uk which I can't remove
Clicking through the manage email control panel tells me that although mail is switched on for my plusnet username there are no mailboxes available (this is the trial product)
I've disabled mail for the domain alias animetrader.co.uk, does this take some time to hit the DNS record shown in Plesk and then replicate out to the web or is there more I need to do?
Any thoughts greatly appreciated

Hi
I have removed the dns records for you in the Plesk control panel, please let me know if you have any further issues.

Thanks for reading and acting so quickly Kev
Does it take some time to propogate or should it take effect immediately?

I believe MX records take about 4 hours.

Re: PAYH, Plusnet hosted domain, Mail MX record

Hi,
I've attempted to transmit messages to the domain animetrader.co.uk again this morning after giving things time to propogate but I still get the same bounce message.
I thought maybe it was something local to our DNS setup at work so I tested using an external mail provider (gmail) which provides slightly different information:
This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification
Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:
    websales@animetrader.co.uk
Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 #5.1.0 Address rejected websales@animetrader.co.uk (state 14).

Is this technically the same problem & should I raise a ticket?

Re: PAYH, Plusnet hosted domain, Mail MX record

The DNS records look OK now so I think everything on Plesk is OK. It's now getting rejected by the Plusnet IronPorts so something isn't right with the mail setup on Plusnet:
The following message to <postmaster@animetrader.co.uk> was undeliverable.
The reason for the problem:
5.1.0 - Unknown address error 550-'#5.1.0 Address rejected postmaster@animetrader.co.uk'

Reporting-MTA: dns; relay.ptn-ipout02.plus.net
Final-Recipient: rfc822;postmaster@animetrader.co.uk
Action: failed
Status: 5.0.0 (permanent failure)
Remote-MTA: dns; [84.92.2.65]
Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 5.1.0 - Unknown address error 550-'#5.1.0 Address rejected postmaster@animetrader.co.uk' (delivery attempts: 0)

A snippet more information, I also have the domain gaskellsimpson.co.uk setup as an alias on the same PAYH account.
Messages sent to the mailboxes @gaskellsimpson.co.uk arrive perfectly and in good time from external sources

Re: PAYH, Plusnet hosted domain, Mail MX record

Huh
I don't see what PAYH has to do with it. Your MX records are pointing to the standard Plusnet servers not PAYH.

Re: PAYH, Plusnet hosted domain, Mail MX record

I'm not overly sure it has myself but it's the only event I could correlate with the result of mail not being delivered to the domain.
It may well be I'm barking up completely the wrong tree

Re: PAYH, Plusnet hosted domain, Mail MX record

On the Plusnet portal go to Domain names. Select CONFIGURE for the animetrader.co.uk domain.
Which of the three options do you have for the Email settings?

Re: PAYH, Plusnet hosted domain, Mail MX record

I've got it set to "I wish to collect my mail using POP3" for both animetrader.co.uk & gaskellsimpson.co.uk
Both have MX records of MX - 20 - mx.last.plus.net.

Re: PAYH, Plusnet hosted domain, Mail MX record

Could it be that animetrader.co.uk is not configured as an acceptable domain on the Ironport boxes properly? I'm guessing this step is normally run automatically, but triggered by what though?
I'd say to check your email settings in the manage my mail tool, and see what your spam settings for animetrader.co.uk are set to.
If there is nothing a miss in there, then try disabling spam filter completely for the animetrader.co.uk domain, wait a couple of hours, then re-enabling it, because that might be the trigger to autosetup the Ironport again.
If that fails, maybe you could disable the Plusnet domain settings option to collect via POP3, wait a couple of hours, then re-enable the setting. That too might force the re-propagation of the settings that haven't made it through yet.
Failing that, you need help from someone who knows more about how the various elements of the mail system hang together, and how to track at which stage the hiccup is occurring!
Hope you get there.
Mike

Re: PAYH, Plusnet hosted domain, Mail MX record

Thanks for the suggestions Mike,
Not the most scientific method of testing but I've changed both the mail handling from POP3 and disabled/re-enabled the spam filtering
See how things go I guess!

Re: PAYH, Plusnet hosted domain, Mail MX record

Turns out this one was beyond the scope of what I could deal with.
Plusnet CSC to the rescue and mail is firing on all cylinders once again.
Thanks to CSC for a swift and accurate resolution
