Need to change my IP address

I need to change my IP address as it's on a Spamhaus blacklist.  I get plagued with BitNinja captcha requests when accessing a hosting company site  (hostinguk.net) because of this.  I've checked out my laptop and am convinced there's nothing bad on it - I've scanned it with BitDefender, MalwareBytes & Windows 11 Anti-virus.  I rebooted the router twice, assuming it would change, but I can see from comments here that rebooting won't do it.

So, is there a way to change my IP address or should i just ask Plusnet for a static IP address? BTW, I have the Hub 2 router.

Re: Need to change my IP address

See also the attached - it appears that it's normal for a Plusnet IP address to be on this spamhaus.org blacklist, but noted as 'PBL'.  Is that the experience of other Plusnet users?  It's certainly giving me a problem.  Would I be better off with a static IP address or will that appear on this list?

Re: Need to change my IP address

The Spamhaus PBL should not cause any issues unless you are running an e-mail server. The list is intended to identify dynamically allocated IP addresses which are not expected to originate e-mail traffic - historically spammers used any address they could compromise to send millions of spam e-mails. The PBL is a way for e-mail originating from such addresses to be blocked.

Static IPs won't appear on the PBL (as they can be used to run legitimate e-mail servers).

However, unless BitNinja are misusing the Spamhaus PBL, it is not the cause of your catpcha issue.

Re: Need to change my IP address

The problem is with hostinguk.net - when you access their site or anything running on their site, you are liable to get a Bitnami captcha check if your IP address is on a blacklist.  I'm getting a an intolerable number of checks, and hostunguk, net support say it's because I'm on this blacklist.  Also because I've failed to complete them - which is incorrect as I only gave up on the last one as it was the straw that broke the camel's back!!   Or maybe I'm just not very good at spotting cars in blurry pictures....  Anyway, thx for the response - I will get a static IP address

I changed to a fixed IP address - and it's also on the same Spamhaus blacklist!

@clarkac

That was a very quick change. Unless things have changed this needs Plusnet intervention and a reboot of your hub.

Re: Need to change my IP address

@clarkac  Are you sure you've changed to a static WAN address, there have been reports that the member centre add-on page is broken and needs Plusnet staff to manually set up the new address, also have you paid the £5 charge?

Re: Need to change my IP address

I logged on to plus.net and a static IP address was offered for a fiver, so I accepted the offer, rebooted and got a new IP address.  I've had a static IP address before, by the way, but that was a while back.  So how do I check that this is really a static ?

Re: Need to change my IP address

@clarkac

Using a command window use nslookup

nslookup <your broadband IP Address>

A dynamic IP address would reply with

example IP Address

nslookup 80.189.0.1
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.10.1

Name: 1.0.189.80.dyn.plus.net
Address: 80.189.0.1

If you get <your account name>.plus.com would be private.

Re: Need to change my IP address

nslookup gave me:

nslookup 212.159.45.226
Server:  [212.159.45.226]
Address:  212.159.45.226

DNS request timed out.

Re: Need to change my IP address

@clarkac  - that looks like the PN DNS servers and not your IP address.
Your IP address starts 51.X.X.X

Re: Need to change my IP address

I logged into the router and it gives my broadband IP address as 212.159.45.226 - the same as various 'what's my IP' sites.  I am using Google 8.8.8.8 for DNS
