Need Admin Access to Legacy "FreeNetName" Website Hosting

Hello...

I'm the web-designer for the Tower Theatre Company, whose website was originally hosted (back in 2000) by FreeNetName (FNN).

FNN was then apparently bought by MadAsAFish (MAAF), which was in turn bought by PlusNet (PN).

We are now in the process of updating our website and need to change the DNS settings of the domain to point to the new site, but I can't get to those details.  Unfortunately, no one in the organisation knows how it was done 'back in the day', or how to access it now.

I can log into our MAAF account where the website is referenced (which I referenced in creating this account), but there is no information on how to get to the domain's administration controls.

Re: Need Admin Access to Legacy "FreeNetName" Website Hosting

You can't. We've never offered the ability to modify the DNS entries or name servers for a Madasafish-hosted domain. You'll need to transfer it to another registrar that offers this functionality. Note that this will have implications on the routing of email for the domain.

Thanks very much for the quick reply.

Then the natural follow-up question: who do I need to talk to to "transfer [the domain] to another registrar that offers this functionality"?

Re: Need Admin Access to Legacy "FreeNetName" Website Hosting

Thanks for getting in touch @towertheatre.

You'd need to sign up with another provider then contact us to provide the new hosters IPSTAG. We'll then arrange for the domain to be transferred over to your new hosting provider

Re: Need Admin Access to Legacy "FreeNetName" Website Hosting

Thanks very much, Matthew.

I can log into our account on MadAsAFish, but functionality there is basically shut down for customer service (keep getting 404 Errors, and circular links).

I've found a hosting provider and their IPS-Tag.  How do I contact someone at PlusNet who can find our account - it's been a real challenge so far getting someone to understand, much less access it - and who can manage the transfer?

Appreciate the help!

Re: Need Admin Access to Legacy "FreeNetName" Website Hosting

If you find it really difficult, going directly to Nominet should be relatively painless, but they do charge a small amount. I had to do it a few years ago when in dispute with a tag holder. So long as you can prove ownership of the domain, it should be quite quick.

Hi towertheatre,

You can always update us here with the IPSTAG or send me a PM if you like and I'll get things picked up on our side.

If you decide to PM please update this post afterwards.

Re: Need Admin Access to Legacy "FreeNetName" Website Hosting

Thanks very much.

The target IPSTAG is: NAMECHEAP-INC

Their process advises:

"If you would like to transfer a .UK domain to Namecheap, you should ask your current registrar to change the IPS tag to NAMECHEAP-INC before you place the transfer request."

Could you please confirm when you've updated it on your side of things?  I'll then trigger the transfer from the other.

Appreciate the help!!

Ugh, is that still happening? Try this link.

Failing the support ticket route above, the website says this:-

Hi @towertheatre,

Have you been able to try calling the number quoted on @bobpullen's post above?

No...I was waiting for Adam to update the account with the IPS tag as he said he would.  See thread above

Why is this so difficult?

@TheMightyAJ  do you realise that it's been illegal for some time (2014 I believe) to use 0844 numbers for post sale customer support?

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

1) I have updated you here with the IPSTAG (8) ; and

2) I have PM'd @adamwalker with the same information (and "update[d] this post afterward").

Plusnet owns Madasafish, which purchased Freenetname.  A "Plusnet Help Team" member with 14,495 posts said that he'll "get things picked up from our side", confirming that that they/you have access to our account, which I - clearly - do not.  Otherwise I'd be doing this myself.

Can someone with admin privileges on your platform either just finally do this, or tell me how I can?

Re: Need Admin Access to Legacy "FreeNetName" Website Hosting

Hi @towertheatre

Thanks for getting back in touch - my apologies that this wasn't picked up for you last week.

I've now raised this to our network team to get the IPSTAG changed - we'd expect this to be done with in the next 48 hours - potentially slightly longer this week due to today's bank holiday.

Best wishes

Dave
