Migration to CloudFlare/O365

Good day,

Hoping someone from support will be able to assist me.

I have the following

Email is hosted with PlusNet
Domain is hosted with PlusNet
Name servers for DNS for the Domain are with PlusNet

I would like to do the following -

Migrate DNS Nameservers to CloudFlare
Migrate mail to O365
Migrate Domain to CloudFlare

Can someone let me know if this order of operations is the correct for migrating email away from PlusNet and other than DNS records needing to update if this will cause any outage?

In CloudFlare I have scanned the plusnet dns records for my email domain and have the mx record in place.  I have the CloudFlare name servers but I do not have the ability to update them in the PlusNet Portal.

Can someone help me with the updating of the name servers?

thanks,

Andy

Migrate DNS Nameservers to CloudFlare

It's not possible to change the nameservers on a PN hosted domain other than by moving the registration away

@AMH1970 Are the domain and email services Plusnet ones 'domain@plus.com' , 'xxxx@username.plus.com'? If so, I don't believe you can migrate them.

@AMH1970 OK. The PN mail cannot be moved anywhere, but as @MisterW says, the .co.uk domain will need to be moved to a new registrar.

Re: Migration to CloudFlare/O365

I'd have thought that if the email address is the same as the domain name then they could both move together but emails held in Plusnet servers could be lost.....

Re: Migration to CloudFlare/O365

Mail handling for the domain can be moved to another provider by transferring the domain registration and hosting to another provider, mail processing for the <account>.plus.com cannot be moved. The PLusnet mail system uses common mailboxes for both the native <mailbox>@<account>.plus.com and <mailbox>@hosteddomain. So even if the domain is moved, any existing mail will still be available on the servers.

Re: Migration to CloudFlare/O365

@MisterW - Does that mean if I transfer the domain registration to CloudFlare for my .co.uk domain, which will start to use their Nameservers and point my MX record back to mx.avasin.plus.net that I can still use PlusNet Mail?  Thanks Andy

Re: Migration to CloudFlare/O365

@AMH1970

that I can still use PlusNet Mail

In theory, yes BUT in practice No!

In order for domain email to be hosted by Plusnet , the domain must use the PN nameservers.

Transferring the domain wont affect email for your <account>.plus.com addresses though.

Re: Migration to CloudFlare/O365

@MisterW .  I don't use the <account>.plus.com email address, but understood.  Sounds like I need to migrate the domain to CloudFlare.  Setup O365 with a user and mailbox for my newly transferred domain.  Point my MX record to O365.  Accept that I will have an email outage during this process.

Appreciate your help on this.

Re: Migration to CloudFlare/O365

Can someone at PlusNet change my ips tag to - CLOUDFLARE for my domain so I can start the migration process.  Thanks.
